So i have QBs in my tent but want to get my buddy's feet wet and don't want to pressure him into top tier lights but don't want him to buy the cheapest piece of crap. I would tell him hands down to spend $185 on a 135 watt QB(that's what they were last time i bought one) and he has a good light for 2x2 to 2.5x2.5 or at a minimum a 55 watt autocob for $150(again what they were at last time i looked). Question is have you found a better value around or +/- from those ranges that grew you some killer plants 1-3 or that particular spacing. Thanks.

Not sure where you are, but if he is unsure he will grow for long enough to justify buying a $200 or more light, a used hid setup from craigslist may be the ticket. Tons of guys getting rid if hid lights by the droves here. They sell for for $40-100.

Option B. (don't shoot me) A Chinese fixture with cobs in it. I know, cheap, foreign, but they do work and are cheap. They can get you enough light for 2.5 x 2.5 for $100 or less.

Option C. Household led bulbs and those chandelier socket adapters that allow you to have 5-7 bulbs or so. Couple of those with a couple of lamp adapters, a board to mount on, some wiring, and you are in for $50 or less with enough light for for 1-3 plants. Look up growing with household led bulbs. All the cool budget minded kids are trying it bongsmilie

Tell him to cut to the chase and buy the qb288... I spent way more money than I had to looking for the right light... As you well know...

HLG has the 4000k QB288 v1 with heat sink for $66. Driver is about $45. A few odds and ends to put it all together around $15 (if you use a repurposed power cord). ~$125 plus shipping. Hard to beat.

I just built the 5000k for a veg light this way (should have gotten the 4000).
