Weird little shell type things on branches possibly sap from quick growth?

because it doesn't really look anything like scale or any of the other effects of scale. Scale will also attack the foliage and the flowers. This is just on stems and stocks. My wife is a certified master gardener and worked in green houses for over a decade and she is stumped on this one. We are pretty sure its not any type of insect as well. Ill know more for sure when my microscope gets here though.

I've seen something similar on Purple-Leaf Sandcherry, but it was black. It was a soft scale, hemispherical in appearance. Scales are sap-suckers and don't attack leaves or flowers, at least not that I'm aware of. Desiccation is the result of the sap-sucking.

Good luck on the ID. I'm curious to know.

I'd still suggest spraying them withe some IS and picking them off.

here is a picture of another grower that had scales. like he said scales attack the stems and are sapsuckers. what u have looks similar but it doesnt look like the exact thing because yours look smaller. maybe they are in a early stage? i just took another look and they dont look much like these.

lol, i would freak out if i had anything alien looking like that going on. But the more pictures of scales I see the more sure I am that that is not the problem. Thanks for the pic though!

i'd say scale....i believe there are a variety so i guessing some may just go for the stem.

here are some similar looking ones.

haha no problem. this one dude had them on here a long time ago, he and everyone else was like wtf are those alien herps things lmao. it was a funny ass thread.

OK as promised, here are some current plant pictures. Took awhile for my camera to charge up. The other thing that set them apart from scales is there dry/crispy and when I touch them they just fall off with 0 damage to the plant.

Update 11-13-10

Everything is going well for the most part.

omg i cant believe that even exists. looking at that shit made me start itching lol. do ppl actually try to get rid of that? id burn it are destroy it all in one way or another.

I have the exact same thing going on with my dwc. They look like very small mini snail shells with no snails in them. When i touch them they drop right off. My plants are super healthy as well no issues. maybe sap????

also is that just two plants right there you have a ton of bud sites looking good...

ya just 2 blue widows there, so we tried a test of taking a pin and poking a stem to see if i could reproduce the little ball, nothing. But my wife found a post elsewhere that leads me to believe that it is sap. Ill keep this updated as we go.

Received my microscope today and verified that the round objects are indeed sap seeping out of small hairline cracks in stems. I also split a stem at the crack to make sure there were not any microscopic critters causing havoc in there. Does not seem to be effecting the growth of the plants.
