Camping!

So I'm taking the wife and little one camping weekend after next. It's the 1st time for both of them! Going to be tenting it up. And roughing it. No water, electricity etc. We're going to be cooking over a fire. I'm going to bring the traditional basics of hot dogs and hamburgers. But have been debating for Saturdays big dinner. I'm torn between steaks or a stew. I think a stew would be easier but there's something so primordial about eating steaks in the woods. What would you guys choose? Does anybody have any meals they love just for camping? Any gear must haves or hacks you'd like to share?

The battery powered air beds are nice to have. Fried potatoes and fish was always a good dinner. Steaks are always on my menu, I personally think they would be easier. Don't forget the bacon to go with eggs ( the plastic egg holders keep them safe in the ice chest).

You're going to be mighty thirsty.

Take some steaks. You'll regret it if you don't.

Have fun.

These are usually a big hit with kids. If you can find a store that carries them. Easy to cook on a campfire. Which brings up another thing. There's burn bans in place across the country. Something to check before leaving to make sure you have cooking equipment if needed.

French press for coffee and a good turbo cooker for water. Something that does enough for ramen noodles or a big cup of coffee and runs off of camp fuel. Way easier than doing everything over the campfire. Depending on the age of the youngster I'd bring games or toys as they get bored quickly and having stuff to entertain them helps to keep the memories of the trip fun. I always liked to teach my son a new survival skill each trip like water purifying, fire making or how to build a shelter. It was something to do and practical woodcraft skills he could have later in life.

Awesome advice so far guys. Thank you so much. I am sold on the steaks. Never developed a taste for fish. I'm a bitch, I know. My wife and kid remind me all the time. I've bought a bunch of shit so far. Because I'm hoping this turns into an annual or couple times an annual thing. And my wife feels bad about all the investments I've made lol. So far I bought some new coolers. A grill basket. A little portable wood burning stove, that I figure I'll just use to boil water for coffee etc. There is a fire pit with grate there already. A rechargeble fan/light combo for the tent. A mess kit. I actually did buy those coffee singles @raratt !! I'm a coffee whore. I bought a USB charger that connects to my Makita batteries. So I can charge phones and lights etc. Gonna bring some of my tools like my blower to inflate the air mattress and Stoke the fire. Some rechargeable flashlight/lantern things. A picnic blanket. Tarp. Survival kit. I'm dropping like a grand lol.

Sounds like your going to have a blast. Enjoy your trip.
Thanks man. I am really excited. We're going with my 2 best friends and their respective families. And it's come full circle because we would go camping together 20 years ago and party our asses off. And now it's 20 years later and we get to enjoy the same thing in a different light with our kids. So it's going to be pretty special.

If you plan on doing this regularly it is good to have some kind of storage bin to put all the camping stuff in and make sure it is restocked after a trip. Salt, pepper, and sugar in the small containers, soap, napkins, etc. Then you just grab the box and don't have to search everything up. Cast iron pan is always good to have.
