So I lost my entire Oz of Purple Kush to mold :finger:, what can I do? I read another thread that said to grind it up, add Alcohol, and filter to make hash, will that work?:bigjoint: What else can I do? I don't think this stuff is smokeable at all right now

Any help is appreciated thanks!

Quickly get another Oz and forget about that one. Just quickly close your eyes and throw it in the toilet and flush. Don't try to do anything to smoke it buddy. Mold makes all kinds of nasty stuff that could probably be disolved into alcohol just like the THC. My best advice buddy. And what a shame too. Do it!

Ah... this sucks, especially after all the effort I put into growing it. On the brightside my Bubba OG, Lemon, and Blue dream survived:bigjoint:

Make hash out of it. You can also make a tincture, as the alcohol will kill any mold instantly. Tincture is a nice way of saying high...

I used moldy bud this year to make hash with bubble bags. It worked fine. I did make sure to dry the moldy bud out before making the hash..

Good Luck

From the bubblebag FAQ

Can I make Bubble Herbal Extract with moldy plant matter?

YES. Bubble Man recommends an extra mold-removing step: place your herbal extract into a jar full of water with a tight-fitting lid and shake it up. The mold spores will float to the top and can be skimmed off with a spoon or turkey baster. Then, rinse the jar into the 25 micron bubble bag and press the moisture out as usual.

Neither bubble bags or alcohol or butane or any other solvent for that matter will remove the potentially toxic chemicals produced by molds. Alcohol may sterilize, but it was not break down the aflatoxins produced by the molds themselves so even though the mold might be dead, the toxins that actually get you sick will still remain. Bubble bags don't sterilize the hash or bud and the screens are too large to filter out mold spores, so running moldy bud in bubble bags is not too smart since you WILL end up with mold in your hash.

Now depending on what molds you have growing, you may or may not be able to safely turn the bud into hash. Without knowing the species of mold you have growing (and most people cannot ID mold species) you are playing a bit of russian rulet with your health. If you have mold that produces aflatoxins (and many do) than no hash process will be able to remove the toxic chemicals. If it is a more benign species, then you will still not remove the mold, but you won't get sick from it either. So, you can take your chances - you might get sick from hash made with moldy bud or you might not - it all depends on what type of mold it was.

I don't fuck around with my health so I have one, and one use only for moldy bud: the compost pile.

From a thread on another site on this topic:

Graywolf: "It sounds like you have bud rot or Botrytis, which tastes and smells like crap but produces no known afla toxins.

I have been successful extracting the oil, dissolving it in alcohol, and passing it through successive syringe filters down to 0.2 microns.

There was no mold taste or odor left and all the mold parts were removed along with any bacteria.

If you have Aspergillus mold, it does produce copious quantities of aflatoxins, which the above process will not remove and can be pernicious."

WolfDawg: "Aflatoxins are toxic and among the most carcinogenic substances known, High-level aflatoxin exposure produces an acute hepatic necrosis, resulting later in cirrhosis, and/or carcinoma of the liver.

Throw that crap out, unless you Know exactly what kind of mold it is, or you can actually filter it like Graywolf, not sure how much you have but however much it probably isn't worth the risk, of course I'm pretty particular with what I smoke....soooo"

come on now... if we were eating it, I'd be worried, but the aflatoxins don't transfer in smoke. It is miniscule.... less than the FDA allows in peanuts.

Abstract

Aflatoxins produced by food-borne molds are known carcinogenic toxins. Aflatoxin B1 (AFB1) is reported as the most toxic of this class of mycotoxins. We have coupled immunoaffinity column extraction with LC/MS to produce a sensitive and selective approach for the study of AFB1. As AFB1 can be potentially found in tobacco it is of interest to establish whether AFB1 can be transferred from a cigarette fortified with AFB1, to the sidestream smoke. Previous studies have found that AFB1 does not transfer to the mainstream smoke. Since sidestream smoke may contain higher concentrations of some smoke components, a method was developed to analyze the sidestream smoke produced from machine-smoked cigarettes. Sidestream smoke condensates collected on Cambridge filter pads were extracted with isopropanol, then further purified using immunoaffinity extraction columns. The extracts were then analyzed by LC/MS and LC/MS/MS. An instrumental limit of detection (LOD) was established at 3.75 pg injected on column, with the limit of quantitation (LOQ) equal to 11.25 pg on column for both LC/MS and LC/MS/MS. The instrument was found to be linear from 11.25 pg to 150 pg (r > 0.995.) Precision ranged from 4.2% to 8.4% at the LOQ, while accuracy ranged from 0.53% to 1.33%. The immunoaffinity extraction method LOD was determined to be 100 pg fortified onto the Cambridge filter. The LOQ was 350 pg. The average recovery of the AFB1 from the Cambridge pad was 82.9% over the range of 100–1000 pg fortified onto the pad. AFB1 was not detected in unfortified cigarettes. A transfer experiment, fortifying cigarettes at 1 μg/cigarette determined that AFB1 was transferred only slightly from the burning cigarette to the sidestream smoke. The mean percent transfer was ONLY 0.087%.

Smoking it is ok, but man, I sure as hell wouldn't want to... just because toxins don't pass in smoke, you could still get sick, asthma maybe?
