.

No one defoliating is going to leave a mess of larf at the bottom of their plant.

Focus the energy up like any grower would do.

I get it. And appreciate it. I dont mind some Larfy buds on those plants. Its sincerely about finding my personal grow style while having some fun experimenting with different strategies.

Plus the forum gets to have a bit of fun debating how its gonna turn out.

Left to right. Defoliated, didnt do shit, and lollipop

Now for the tops of the plants.

Defoliated

Didn't do shit

Lollipop

Now 1 shot of the best cola imo from each.
Defoliated

Didn't do shit

Lollipop20200831_083506.jpg

Now again want to remind you all that the defoliated plant flowered one week after the other 2.

Didnt do shit and lollipop flowered at the same time.

All 3 got an increase in feeding this past week from 15% of fox farms line up to 33% of reccomended.

Next defoliation is on Sept 3rd.

White spots are ash from the fires. When the wind blows I get ash it is what it is.

Feel free to ask questions.

Sup RIU.

Was in another thread about why defoliation is such an at odds topic. I had mentioned I was doing a side by side by side comparison of the 3 styles. I will show some pics of begining of flower and document them going forward for all of us.

Some variables that probably will cause many to disqualify this grow are.... outdoor plants, not clones (all from seed from same mother) but pheno types will cause a conversation, and when they began to flower. Defoliated plant began flowering exactly 1 week after the other 2.

Here is 1st picture this here is 1 week ago when I did a major defoliation. I did not go insane, but its a large difference from natural.

From left to right.

Defoliated plant, Plant I didn't do shit but cut some bottom fan leaves to make watering easier for the middle one and the lollipop on the far right.

Defoliation was on the 14th. Next will be Sept 3rd.
Here is today same left to right.

Now some things I have already noticed.

The defoliated plant became very sensitive to nutrients. To the point where 15% of recommended value began burns. The other 2 took them like champions on 1st feed after defoliation. The second feeding on all went off without a hitch.

Both the defoliated and lollipop began showing nirtogen deficiencies as well while the didnt do shit plant seems perfectly fine. Gotta say I like how the lollipop is and the didn't do shit is budding. Which defoliate is to early for me to say if im a fan.

All were topped and LST thru veg, all went through the same bullshit element issues from being outdoors, and all have had the same nutes the entire time.

Soil recipe 420 soil, FF line of nutes, and lots of love.

All 3 are BC big bud
@Lime
My money's on the lollipopped one!

I suppose it would depend on what you're looking for. If you are battling bud rot due to high humidity, you might consider lollipopping AND defoliation to maximize airflow. If humidity isn't a problem, you can have a bushier plant. But having the prettiest MJ plant in early flower doesn't mean shit if you lose all that bud to rot.
The bud rot isn't an issue here. Northern California avg Rh here is 35%. Never rains during the summer either.

I guess that if they are all clones grown in roughly the same condition the end product probably would be the same quality.

I’m watching to see if there is any difference in yield (which is supposed to be the benefit of all this training) and if it impacts trimming/reduces larf. If it does impact quality that would be super interesting...but I can’t see that happening.

I’m also betting that some strains would respond differently...but I’m betting this will be a good rule of thumb. Tons of people spew their opinions without doing side by side. (So this is a fun little experiment to watch...even if it’s not a “study”)

I’m betting weight difference will mostly be negligible...But the bud structures will be different. The defoliate will have the least weight but the structure will look good and be easover to trim. The untouched will be more larfy and the lolly will be in between...

My hunch on quality and the effect is that the defoliated might be the weakest THC level because of forcing it to redirect energy to reforming new leaves.

I have no scientific backing on that btw. Just what makes sense in my head. But im gonna find out if im wrong.

Il have the THC levels tested for us.

main reason i do it is just keeping everything clean and healthy i dont like decaying or dead leaves in my area. also helps u get a gather whats up with your plants.
If its in between feeding and I get some yellowing il let the plants keep those leaves until the next feeding. Once I feed I pull them so I can guage whats going on.

But for the most part all 3 of them have not given me any yellowing in a couple weeks due to increasing the % of the reccomended values.

33% of fox farms top 3 stopped all yellowing up until 1 day before next feeding. Today they got another increase to 50%.

Seems to be taking care of all deficiencies.
