Depression/Back Pain...strain?

Most of the weed I get around here is not really helping my symptoms like they used to and I think it's because it isn't the true, nicely grown medical marijuana you see grown with care. We still have 16/17 year old growers just growing some dank hydro, lulz. So, when I move up to Vancouver and hopefully get my card i'll be growing what I need and wanted to know a good strain for depression and back pain with outmaking me tired.

I've found that white widow properly grown (aka organic - just taste's better) does well with any sort of ache & pain I might have, however be aware of her "couch lock" effect.

I am not an expert on actual medicinal marijuana but from my personal experience with the substance and with both pain and depression it seems to me that you are asking for something that does not exist.

For depression you would want something that gives you a high, that makes you feel happy and motivated and that would be a sativa. The thing is that sativas are not known for their ability to do anything about pain.

An indica, especially a heavy one, will help with pain but they tend to bring you down and that is not beneficial when it comes to dealing with depression.

I have never run across a strain that handles both problems at the same time very well. Whatever cross I have tried one of the plants genetics overpowered or blended with the other plants genetics enough so you would get one of the two desired effects but not both or just a little of the two desired effects but not much of either. There are some that will help one problem well or half well and slightly help the other but most will help one but not help the other or possibly exasperate the other, at least in the case of depression.

You can use a heavy indica and it will ‘mask’ the depression in that you will be such a zombie that you will not think or care about anything or much of anything but it will not be uplifting and it will not make you happy and make you feel motivated. Basically it will allow you to run and hide from depression but it will not be a temporary fix for it making you feel like whistling and skipping for joy.

Now there may be something out there that I have never tried and have never read about that will do both. For your sake I hope such a strain exists and that you find it but in my experience it seems to be an either or situation in that no cross will really do both of what you want in the way that I tend to believe you would want it to.

I sincerely hope that someone else says they know of some strain or strains that will do what you need but I do not know of any that will give you the relief you are looking for in the way I tend to believe you are trying to find at the same time.

You may have to shoot for one or the other or grow different types and depending on your present condition use one or the other and maybe you will have to find something that will be a middle of the road option that will do a little of both at the same time but not give major relief to both problems at the same time. I hope I am wrong but that is all that I have ever run across or read about.

My suggestion would be to research medical marijuana strains and their effects and see if one or some do in fact help with both problems at the same time. With there being so very many strains/crosses to chose from one or some may exist that are not major names, not the flavor of the month buzz that most people salivate for but to find if one or several will do what you need may take actual research instead of just asking growers since most growers do not seem to be growing for medicinal purposes and instead for the type of high or buzz or stone they simply enjoy and not something they physically or psychologically need.

Ouch dude, that sounds painful - I hope you locate something that helps with that. BTW, if I were you I'd look at something with a Sativa mix so you dont end up feeling like someone dropped a piano on your head.
Try "Flo" or "Flying Dragon" - they are tasty, potent and yet still give you an "Up" buzz.

I've got 25 years experience on the dark side of depression. Do I get the job? ;)

I've been researching, developing my growing skills and testing strains for the past 5 years. I've got 6 strains that I'm growing now that are good, some great, and I'm bringing in a new strain every couple of months or so. I'm compiling a list of strains that I want to test and the effects strains have on resistant depression and mania.

I've found that both indicas and sativas can help, different strains at different times of the day and for different mental pain. A clear headed sativa like Kali Mist is a great all day smoke; you might want something stronger at night if you need to check out, like Train Wreck or Sour Diesel. Blueberry is a great euphoric stone - for when you want to chill and watch Star Trek reruns; Bubblegum (Serious) is a great euphoric high if you want to be social or go surfing.

I'll post my sativa list and some med lists I've picked up, I'll post some other stuff later.

Big Laughing - Dr Greenthumb
Bubblegum - Serious Seeds
Kali Mist - Serious Seeds
Red Diesel - Barney's Farm
Strawberry Cough - Dutch Passion
.
Blueberry - (DJ Short) Dutch Passion

AK47 - Serious Seeds: Rocket Fuel. Up, soaring, not functional. One hit, incredibly potent. Stinks like cat piss and dead skunk. Or perhaps smells as if a cat pissed on a skunk and the smell was so bad the skunk died, then the cat dragged the skunk into a garbage bag and left it in the sun for a week. Get odor control if you're doing this strain.

Alaskan Ice - Greenhouse: one of the strongest cannabis plants ever bred .. a cross of original Green House White Widow and Pure Haze ... has all the well known characteristics of the White Widow, with a much higher THC content and a very sativa-like effect, energizing and very trippy. CBD level is also very high at over 1%, giving it a complete physical effect that follows the first burst of high. The taste is spicy and hazy, with a very well balanced bouquet in between the White Widow and the Haze flavors.

Arjan's Haze #3 - Greenhouse: Euphoric, cerebral high with trippy undertones.

Big Laughing - Dr Greenthumb: instant mood changer, you will not be able to stop laughing, up silly high, very potent. Easy to grow, forgiving. Amazing spicy wood taste, you never want to exhale. My favorite strain.

Bubblegum - Serious Seeds: uplifting, euphoric, clear, social.

Cheese - Big Bhudda: appealing fruity fresh smell, uplifting effect, highly pungent hence its name! No ceiling high, little tolerance build up.

Cheese S1 Feminized seeds from original clone - Dr Greenthumb
: Uplifting high that lasts four hour, unusual cheesy smell with deeply pungent earthy taste.

Durban Poison - Dutch Passion: The plant produces a Thai-like aniseed smell similar to licorice. A husky, earthy taste pleasant to the smoker. Durban Poison is well known for it's "up - feel good" high that produces an energetic, trip effect. A good beginner strain, inside or out, does well under artificial light, 8-9 week flower, 100% Sativa.

F13 - DJ Short: F-13 a Holy Grail plant of four-star excellence. Previously unreleased, a very desirable product and potential breeder. A more sativa hybrid of medium height with long, spear-shaped, dense and resinous buds and an earlier finish-time than most sativa. The superlative quality of the finished product is remarkable: A clear, clean, crisp head of the kindest order. This girl really rings the bell every time! Not for the couch-lock crowd, this heady sativa is for those who truly enjoy its stimulating yet comfortable appeal. A real day-brightener. DJ's personal favorite from this batch. Grow Location: Indoor Flowering: 7 - 9 weeks Yield: Average

Flo - (DJ Short) Dutch Passion: Unique motivating high.

Jack Flash (Jack Herer) - Sensi
: Exotic high, powerful on body and mind. Trippy. The best Jack Herer is often passed around a select circle of friends - an example of one of those things that money just can’t buy. The trait common to all Jack Herer phenotypes is a dazzling double-edged potency - a stratospheric cerebral high underpinned by a breathtaking body-buzz with seismic power. Smokers should be prepared to feel the earth shake beneath their feet - which can be a very pleasant feeling when your head is firmly in the clouds. The cat's meow.

Kali Mist - Serious Seeds: up, clear, energized, no ceiling. Top sativa today, so says the advertising.

Power Plant - Dutch Passion: Pure Power Plant has a pleasant almost pine after taste and a powerful up social buzz. Large yield, 8-9 weeks flower, VERY odorous in late flowering. The smoke after 15 days of drying and 15 of curing is soft, smooth, sweet, fruity (mainly citrus and orange) with piney undertones. The effect is mainly in the head ,uplifting with a good potency without body effect; very good day smoking, almost inspiring.

Red Diesel - Barney's Farm: up and trippy.

Skunk #1 (Original) - Seedsman: Like the origional Cheese: a sweet smell and taste with a cerebral high.

Strawberry Cough - Dutch Passion: up, clear, mild, melts anxiety, good all day bud.

Super Silver Haze - Greenhouse: Potent. Potent. Potent. Creepy and powerful on the body. 4 phenos, the best sativa pheno: Smell is fairly strong floral & spicey with a hint of sweetness. Taste is very spicey with a great hazey slightly sweet aftertaste. The high is a stupifying mix of Sativa and Indica effects. The Sativa side is visual mentally confusing (hard to think straight/concentrate) while the Indica is just enough to relax the body (kill the pain) & take away most of the edgy racey paranoia feeling of the Haze.

Texada Timewarp - (Peak has been out for a year-who?): up high, beautiful lemony fresh smelling buds. Great producing strain outdoors, very dependable. Can grow to 12' outdoors. TT is from Vancouver Island, British Columbia, Canada - good for short growing seasons.

Trainwreck - Greenhouse: Effect: Like the name suggests, a real blast. It hits fast, and it hits hard. Stoney on the body, confusing and trippy on the brain. A truly powerful smoke.

White Widow - Seedsman: Unique, refreshing taste, strong skunky smell, mind-blowing, sugary appearance, one of the finest quality highs you could ever experience. A few tokes of White Widow and you’ll be sent into a floating utopia. A light and airy high bursting with energy, White Widow is a classic, psychedelic sativa strain not to be missed.

I also have Blueberry - (DJ Short) Dutch Passion and am going to get Medicine Man - Mr Nice (or White Rhino - Greenhouse), but they're obviously not sativas so they didn't make the list.

Know your own stone

by DJ Short (01 Sept, 1999) An educated and descerning palate is a key requirement in breeding and appreciating cannabis.

An educated palate

The breeding and production of fine quality cannabis is more an art than a science. A creative mind and sense of imagination is necessary to achieve success in this field. The other requirement is a very discerning palate, including the ability to discern and appreciate subtle variations in taste, smell and mental experience.

Anatomically, the palate is located between the roof of the mouth and the nasal passages. The intricacies of taste and palate are complex and poorly understood. The taste buds in the tongue and mouth make up only a small fraction of the mechanisms used to interpret taste and smell.

Olfaction is the term used to describe the sense of smell. The olfactory bulb is the main sensor used to experience and interpret smells. This organ is located behind the nasal passages – up your nose. The sense of smell is one of the most complex we possess, and more of the brain is dedicated to processing smells than any other sense. Smell is closely related to memory, especially older memories. Anatomically, this region is located between the cortex and the occipital lobes, above and around the ears to the top of the head.

Research and experience suggest that some people have a greater natural ability to discern taste and smell than others. The palate can also be developed, educated and refined.

There are many similarities between the wine industry and the cannabis industry. One of these is that both use "expert palates" to identify and discern the various desirable traits of a product. However, unlike wine, cannabis has another added aspect to consider: the type of experience produced by the product. Alcohol's main experience is similar (and overconsumption can be fatal) while cannabis provides a wide range of effects and is non-toxic.

Some herb is strictly pleasing to the mental palate but is not so tasty, while other might taste great but have mild or unpleasant effects.

Spectrums of experience

The first spectrum to consider is the "up and down" experience. "Up" refers to the stimulating aspects of cannabis, while "down" refers to sedative qualities. Up pot tends to liven the disposition and stimulate the emotions, inspiring sociability and talkativeness. Down pot tends to produce sedative and depressant effects. Some people refer to stimulating pot as being a "head" high and sedative pot as being a "body" high, yet although partially true this is also misleading.

Body and head highs are the next spectrum of the cannabis experience. Generally speaking, head highs are stimulating and body highs are sedative, but not all are. Some body highs are stimulating and some head highs are depressing. I once sampled a terribly paranoia-inducing head pot that inspired great couch lock qualities. I called it Boo-Goo.

Early to late harvest will affect the head to body spectrum expressed by a certain plant, with the later harvest tending to produce more body and sedative effects. However, I believe that certain aspects of this spectrum to be genetically inherited.

Next to consider are aspects of duration. Some cannabis tends to be short-acting (15-30min) whereas other varieties last much longer (6-7 hours). Once again production, harvesting and curing techniques can influence aspects of this spectrum, but much of this effect is inherited.

For me, the most important aspect of the cannabis experience to consider is tolerance. This refers to the product's ability to provide the same experience via the same amount over time – the burnout factor. By "over time" I mean the long run: months, years, decades...

Most of the cannabis I see on the market today has a terrible tolerance factor – a quick burnout time with the product's novelty lasting less than a week. Luther Burbank's model of breeding needs to be employed here and no expression of tolerance to your product is to be tolerated. An example of where intolerance to tolerance is tolerated – enough already!

Another aspect of tolerance is "ceiling." This refers to how high (or far) one is capable of going with the variety. How many hits can you consume until more hits are unnoticeable? Most indicas have a low ceiling of less than 10 hits. For me that's usually around 5 hits in one smoking session. If I smoke more than 5 hits of a strong indica I will either not notice the post-ceiling hits, or I will fall asleep.

Some sativas have a very high ceiling, or seem to have none at all! This means that the more you consume, the higher and further you go. Oaxaca Highland Gold, Black Magic African, and Highland Thai were some of the herbs I've tried with very high or no ceiling.

The final aspect of mental effects to consider when sampling strains for breeding is the tendency to produce anxiety. Certain strains of cannabis increase anxiety while others decrease it. This is also true for other emotions, which some strains may suppress while others may augment their intensity. Generally stimulating and head varieties are the ones that can produce unwanted anxiety, but this is not always the case. Quickly cured buds or an over-early harvest are contributing factors to anxiety-increasing pot, but this trait is also genetic in nature.

Tastes and tasters

The physical palates of cannabis add another dimension to the equation. Taste is an important factor toward determining the desirability of most cannabis. The range of flavours expressed by the genus cannabis is extraordinary. No other plant on the planet can equal the cacophony of smells and tastes available from cannabis. This fact alone should interest researchers from several fields.

The range of possible smells and tastes a human can experience is large and complex. To date, no-one has created a fully usable olfaction chart, but Ann Noble developed a nifty "aroma wheel" for the wine industry, which inspired me to develop a cannabis olfaction chart. Like Ann's wheel, more basic aroma categories like "fruity", "floral", "spicy" and "pungent" go in the centre, and branch out into more specific aromas. So beneath "fruity" goes "berry" and "citrus", and beneath "citrus" is "lemon", "lime" and "orange".

The main cannabis aromas are: woody, spicy, fruity, earthen, pungent, chemical and vegetative – a wide range indeed. More specific aromas include pine and cedar under "woody", musty and dusty for "earthen", blueberry and mango under "fruity", and many others. Most aromas are possible through some combination of strains. Many of these strains were best expressed and acclimated when they were grown outdoors in their region-of-origin, or homeland.

Note that aroma and flavour vary between various stages of the plant. The aroma of a live bud on the plant, a dried and cured bud, and the smoke on the inhale and exhale, may all be different from each other. My number one goal when breeding cannabis is the quality of the perfectly matured, trimmed and cured bud and the experience it provides.

I strongly recommend the use of "tasters" to help analyze the qualities of a given smoke. I prefer highly educated, seasoned and critical elders as they tend to be the most helpful in their analysis and feedback. If there is the slightest drawback to the product, such as arrhythmia, tachycardia, paranoia, or what have you, the experienced elder taster will be the first to notice it. By the same token, if a product is exceptionally fine, the experienced elder taster will also likely be among the first to fully appreciate this. Besides, the elders always appreciate good medicine.

The best way to educate and train the palate is through experience. Unfortunately, there has been a great depletion of variance among the product available to the public. Most grow-ops focus on quantity over quality, and as a result a general blandness has developed. In future articles I will describe some of the great region-of-origin varieties that were available twenty years ago, describing their aroma, flavour, effects, and growth patterns.

Romulan-munchies, sleep inducer
AK-47-pain relief, day dreaming, anti stress

Hi all- I've been working my way through the various strains, trying to find an appropriate cannabis strain for me. My heart has a tendency to race, so I avoid most Sativas. Here's my experiences so far:

Romulan: Pleasant slight mental high. *Great painkiller*/minor muscle relaxant. Aided sleep. My heart doesn't race at all on this stuff! Apparently, it has a lower THC content than many, and this may account for it's mellowness. Yeah! It also doesnt make me feel 'stoned' or stupid.

Blueberry Kush: Medium pain control. Medium body high, STRONG sleep inducer. Knocked me out....twice.

Peak 19- Too strong! 1/4 of a puff made my heart race for about a half hour, and made me feel like I was going to be ill. I hate this crap!!

Mango+Durban cross: Decent painkiller, euphoric feeling, 'couch-lock'. Slightly 'stupid' high, and munchie inducer. Makes my fingers feel numb occasionally.

Trainwreck: Anti-anxiety. Muddled my thoughts a bit but not too much to be disturbing. Good painkiller. Slight heartrate elevation. Extreme munchee inducer.

The Skunk#1 that was grown on the PainPal system is VERY relaxing for me, it numbs my chronic back pain and is a real easy on the throat smoke. Two reasonable sized bowls and I'm off to "la la land"

Nevles Haze is really good for psychiactric conditions, mood, and anxiety. I love Sensi-Star for it's ability to control muscle pain and nausea. It also has a wonderful aroma and taste to boot.

I had a friend (RIP) who used to swear by Super Silver Haze cookies for his troublesome RLS and arthritic spinal problems. I have a couple of people I caregive that gave the strain a trial. Both of them said that the SSH cookies worked better than Rx medication and that Indica's did nothing for them.

They also are very good for neuropathy and spasms from Multiple Sclerosis.
I eat 2 strong cookies a day - like clockwork - and dropped the Rx meds for spasms. This works well for me and it's the first thing I will give to someone
who has MS or bladder problems that come with MS. Nothing I've used works better.

I have said it before, the Amsterdam Bubble Funk has a way of getting rid of my HEADACHES when the pinched nerve in my neck acts up with those top of the cranium gems of PAIN. Without a doubt, better than any asprin ever taken, and with immediate relief. As a general pain reliever, this strain does little for my FIBROMYALGIA. For that pain, i rely on Bubble Gum, or Blueberry to get me the relief i need, for the most part.

BUBBLE GUM, LIFESAVER, AMSTERDAM BUBBLE FUNK, & Kali Misty definitely help me to cope with my FIBO flare ups, by the way

AK-47- A more 'active' high, pretty decent munchie factor after a few minutes, and a very pleasant mental haze. Pain relief is definitely also a good plus with this one: an 8 for neuropathic pain, and a 9 for muscular pain. Effects are felt instantly, and although it's very potent, it doesn't make my heart race at all.

New York City Diesel- This strain tends to put a bit of 'tightness' in my chest. A 7-8 for pain control, and an odd discernable head buzz. This tends to come on slowly for me. Small munchie factor.

Trainwreck (further thoughts)- This is a really great strain to be active with. I've been using Trainwreck in the morning, followed by small hits of AK-47 throughout the day for pain relief, and it's very effective.

Medicine Man - Mr Nice: Excellent for neuropathic pain. I've been told by some that this is another name for White Rhino....although it doesn't seem to have as 'active' a quality as I expected from this strain. More than any other strain, this cannabis creates a fogging mental haze that can be shaken off if necessary, but really helps with perception of pain. I give this a 10 out of 10 for pain control and general anti-anxiety/mood elevation, however, I'd save it for the night- it's not the most motivating thing in the world, although it is possible to become productive if you push yourself enough.

Afgooy. Great for stomach stuff as well. Serious couch lock. This stuff will make your face numb.

M-39- Very happy, decent bodily relaxation, excellent anti-anxiety, and good for cramps.

Silver Haze- AMAZING for pain- it's a very even head/body buzz, but it's an alert, cerebral one. I want to be busy when I'm on this stuff.

RomSpice- This is the strongest body high I've ever felt. It literally makes my whole body feel numb and tingly. I give it a 12 out of 10 for pain. It surpasses Romulan by at least half. AMAZING and wonderful! It not only kills my pain- without massive amounts of opiates, but it also helps withdrawl symptoms- VERY well. It brought my aches down to being barely tolerable with advil (as opposed to me lying on the floor aching, shaking and vomiting).

I highly recommend the club on 9th St. (10th st. is okay too, but the staff isn't nearly as knowledgable) in San Francisco. They know exactly what strains suit which ailments. Apparently, Cindy99 is supposed to be excellent for MS- they make bhang out of the most potent strains they have (RomSpice and Cindy99 for this batch), and many MS patients haven't needed anything more than an occasional advil. AMAZING stuff.

Anti nausea strains: (I have BAD nausea due to a bad liver, kidney disfunction, and mental trauma/PTSD) RomSpice, Silver Haze, Romulan, NY Sour Diesel, M-39, Blue Moonshine, are ALL excellent- their effectivness is in order from greatest to lesser- but all of them work very well.

NY Sour Diesel is excellent for anxiety, as is Bubblegum. SD gives an almost tangible sense of relaxation in the head- it killed a developing migraine before it started.

My personal preference for treating MS, is ANY strong Indica ... i stay away from any/all pure Sativas ... the reason is the effects from Sativas- energetic up buzz ... activates my spazticity with this disease ... it turns on my shaking in plain terms, makes me shake more,, it makes me vibrate, -try drinking coffeee i end up wearing it. ... so for me,, an Indica,, a very very strong Indica, is what i need to treat my issues with MS- Neuropathic pain,, spazticity ...

papaya: really helps chronic insomnia esp kief in cooking...

White Rhino: eases some chronic pain and assisted with hunger issues through chemo

Female Seeds Grapefruit: Great for depression but not so good for anxiety issues.

White Widow: Found to be good for depression and lessens anxiety (again personal opinion here)

northen light x big bud: Good for moderate pain and late picked found to give a relaxing buzz...good for stress through pain, anxiety and long term chemo fatigue

You could say that I either have a passion, or that I have no choice.

A lot of both really. :)

I just want it said here, and I don't care what anyone thinks - I hate Strawberry Cough.

There, I said it. Now we all have to live with it.

"back pain with outmaking me tired"

Do you know what's causing the back pain? Spine, weak abdominal muscles, injury ... ?

A potent indica like Medicine Man (White Rhino) would be the obvious choice, but if you don't want to be sedated look at a powerful sativa like SSH. I've read that a strong cerebral high can be just as effective with chronic pain as an indica, plus it'll be good for depression. SSH is too much of a knock out for an all day, functional, antidepressant though.

I grew 4 Strawberry Cough (Dutch Passion) clones in hydro and the mother in pro mix, General Hydroponics for hydro and Fox Farm liquids for the pro mix. Flushed for 2 weeks in dirt, 1 week in water. Quick roast cured for vaporizer, and air cured in jar for 5 weeks.

I find it tastes chemically, on the back and sides of tounge. No strawberry taste on the inhale, hold, exhale or cough. Just chemical. Haven't read this from other growers, but I grew 5 plants in 3 different containers with 2 different fertilizers, and cured different ways. All bud from all 5 plants tastes worse than shit.

Too mild, no potency what so ever. I've read this kind of review on potency from many growers.

The one good thing is that it melts anxiety in minutes. Amazing and clear if that's all you want. Clear because you don't feel high ... AT ALL!

I've got about 2 litres of bud left on my last plant and I feel like chucking it. I tried mixing it with Northern Berry to improve the taste but the toxic waste that is the Strawberry Cough's putridness overwhelmed the fruity beauty of the NB. I find that I avoid vaporizing SC and stick to the better tasting, more potent bud from PeakSeedsBC.

I've got 3 clones in hydro flowering out now, I'm going to do a couple 24" dirt clones. If I can't improve my growing to get a better high/taste I'm chucking the strain. I hate the stuff. I really do.

i have had multiple back surgeries, alot of days i cant move or get out of bed,i have grown alot of strains smoked a hell of alot more, and i have not found a good pain weed that does not make you tired somewhat, ive not come across it any way,but its not a perfect world.usually if it numbs the body it numbs the mind, and the best that ive come across has been white rhino and chemo (the red phenoe).the blue berry is good as well but it can be trippy so not good for depression.as for sativas they do not do the number for chronic serious pain,at least nont that ive tried,im going to try some nepal baba it is a cross of nepalese land race and northen lights,i heard that nepaleese strans are sa=tiva but are great for pain we will see im cracking the beans in 4 weeks.any one grow nepal baba by dr.atomic.
