16-18" sounds good. You could get closer probably.
Wow, that seems quite far away, almost 600 hps height. Lets rephrase this: if i wanted to keep them some thing like 8 inches, inorder to minimise light loss, what wattage could i get away with? Its an open space without reflective walls, so 18 inches seems like it will unnecessaryily lose a lot of light. Maybe ok for the centre of cannopy, but on the sides it seems very photon spendy.

I'd say 10 - 12" at 80 watts for circa 900 umoles

There is no " center " per say with this panel , spread is uniform and multiplied when using multiples. They do do not follow rules as with HID lights over canopy. They are improved with optics over OPEN SPACES - an easy fix for your setup. ( @robincnn @Stephenj37826 ).

The FRINGE areas actually grow quite well , I currently have a 4 foot plant PLUS ( GG4 ) that has been solely a fringe corner grow. It is taller than hang panel with remainder at corner area of desktop grow area. ( will post pic tomorrow- lights out right now ) .
That wasn't my plan but she is thriving like a champ WITHOUT being directly under.

As far as height - 15-18" is the most common , bringing panel closer really isn't needed.
BUT ..... With a " dimmed " output you can bring it closer. Driver specific.

Be aware that these panels jump in efficiency as power is near MID POWER LEVELS .
Sure you can go balls to the wall , but it actually gets better with less wattage - less heat , less load , higher LM/W . Take the thinking of nitro burning light setups and throw that out the window. It's good to have power on reserve but you may want dimming capability.

3x3 update - Weekend

Mephisto TOOF Decay auto
HSO Blue Dream ( S1 seed )
Peat mix
Dr. Earth nutes
Kelp liquid
Tap Water
PH 6.3
18/6 cycle from seed

QB : 4 panel with cobs ( 3500 K )
Power currently: 355w DIMMED
Temps 77°

Shoe Size : 10.5
Lactose intolerant

Ok well finishing week 5 ( Sunday ) and they are adding belly fat. Fading is normal to me and they are completely drained before they just fall off. Back in the day , I probably would have grabbed the sweetners but I find it really is not a big difference maker. But I find that making KELP a regular part of my grows will continue. They really perk up and I add during inbetween waterings. As the summer creeps nearer the only other add on nute I will use will be Silica. It really stock up the stalks and makes the girls tough .... That will start with the new seedlings I just popped

So I figure at least 3-4 weeks to go ..... No hurry so they gets done when they gets done.

It's more the distribution of light. You'd need to hang one QB per sqft to get down to 8".

If you want the light to be close to the plants, you should have gotten led strips. Or smaller COBs like the Citizen 1212.

I think my cab is 26" tall an i screwed o=mine on also. I used 1 1/4" screws to leave an 3/4" airgap

I love the qb120s I have 6 of them. Really so versatile. You can turn them down and put it inches from the canopy or turn them up and really get some decent spread and penetration. I have 2 in a cab that’s only 22.5 inches tall and they are attached to the roof of the cab.

My board is all rigged up but I have a few questions...
What is this resistor for? I followed a tutorial on LEDgardner but not sure if my potential meter will "measure less than its rated resistance"
Instead of using HLG-240H-48B I chose HLG-320H-48A instead.

Don't all the A series drivers have internal built in dimmers?
