ohh dude.. i've used every type of airstone you can imagine.... i personaly beleave they are no good, reason being your avrage air pump really dosn't work with them... they don't pum the bubbles...

welll lets start t thebegging, cuz i'm a ig ofan of DWC... is your DWC in a 5gal bucket or did you make it our of 6" or 8" PVC? reason being, its important to have alot of air... like your roots and air, they need each other.... like need need each other, if you don't have enough air you will get root rot... nasty nasty nasty.....

soo first off what do you have for an air pump? personaly i use a 100watt pond master to push from 9 to 13 air stones (depending on how i am feeling) you can look up a pond master on ebay... and i'll tell you, i get explosive growth out of it.... now you may not need such a big air pump.. i don't even know what your setup it, but you gotta make sure you get enough bubbles.... i'm looking at putting together puckets and these are what i'm thinking about using:

Price1

the thing is tho, its not just about the air stone your using, its also about the air pump you have, alot of times i find the dinky ones you get at the store, just arnt worth it... for a 2 to 4 plant setup in buckets iw ould recomend using thows disks and a pump like the following one...

and one of these for air...
Supreme Pondmaster Air Pumps - Pondliner.com

the AP-40 is the one i'd recomend

i use a ap-100 for 9 plants... with 12" elite disposable air stones in a nft-dwc highbread system.. made from 6" pvc pipe if your gona make one i would recomend using 8" pvc pipe, you use caps on the ends, with reducers, like with 8" pipe i would get caps for the end, then put in 4" drainage holes, so the pipe is about 1/2 fulll of nutriants, maybe a little better more then 1/2, just so the watter comes up a 1/2 an inch to an inch below the bottom of where the baskets are... , now at the other end of the pipe there is another cap... and you just run a hose to it... so you pump nutes from the res, to the end of the pipe and they run out back into the rez... thats the NFT part..easyer to mage your ph like this too..
you ballance the rez, then after you ballance the rez, it like adjustes to the solution in the rail... anyway, just some food for thought... i'm gona go work on my profile now... :)

Thanks for all the info!! I was waiting to buy a pump when I figured out which way to go as far as stones or the wand was concerned...I will be using a 18 gallon rubbermaid for 6 plants, figured 1 12 inch stone for every 2 plants, so 3 12 inch stones per res. Going to have 4 resevoirs, so 12 stones all together. Kinda figured on having to have more than one pump, then I saw the bubble wand and was curious if it worked any better....how loud is the pump you recommend? Also do you have any pics of the setup you were describing??

hey, i went to post a reply, but had some computer probs last night then fell asleep...

soo leave me read the queshtion back over again...

ok, i can make a drawing of the system on here.. prety simply

------------------ ---------------------- <-- top of pipe
0 0
0 0 <---net pot
000000
*********************************** <-- nutriant watter line

XXXXXXXXXXXXXXX
XXXXXXXXXXXXXXX <---- air stone
------------------------------------------------

that what it looks like inside the pipe... the at the end of the pipe where it goes back into the rez.. its like this

|----------------------------------------- <--top of pipe
--------
this is a 3" drain custom fitted into
the end cap of a 6 inch pipe end cap
--------|
|
|
|--------| |--------------------------- <--bottom of pipe
| | <--- drainage valve

there is about 3" of nutriants in the gully of the 6' pipe thats the DWC part, now i would suggest using 8" pipes if you can get them... just so the roots have more room, not that i have ever run out of room in mine for the roots, but i always think, if my roots had more room maybe they would grow bigger... so if i was ever to rebuild mine.. i would go with 8" instead of 6" pipe.. i think i would still use the 3" reducers out of the caps weather 6 or 8 inch pipe was used...

now you also asked about the pump... the AP-100 will take care of all you needs plus it is very quiet, i can't even hear mine running... its an awsome pump, i recomed taking the top cover off of it... you deffinatly get what you pay for... the ap-100 is about 150bux.. you will deffinatly be happy...

if you are going to run a bunch of stones the only other thing to think of is getting equil air pressure to all the stones... to do this, easily, just cut all your air hoses to the same length... thats what i do.. its kinda ghetto.. but it works out well for me..

now one other thing on the rails i was telling you about, the side ware the watter comes in... this is the NFT part of it.... cuz there is always watter recirculating though the system... that way you can mix up a bunch of nutes and just maintain one res.. instead of 4... you can even make the rubber made tubs recircualting if you want, i think its eayser to maintain one rez, but its safer to have 4, incase something goes wrong you always have backup.. but i;m lazzy soo.. i just have one.. here it goes... the other side of the pvc rail

|----------------------------------------- <--top of pipe
--------
--------| <--- this is a garden hose hook up fitted into the end cap
| the garden hose goes back to the pump thats in the rez
| it takes a small pump to run... 150 - 200 gph
| i also have a pvc elbo on the inside of the rail
| so when the watter comes in, it goes down instead of
| shooting strait out... i feel it fills the rail better like that.
|------------------------------------------ <-- bottom

soo thats pretty much it, if you still want see some pics, i'll see about taking some later on tonight...

peace out

Thanks again dank...decided to run with 4 different resevoirs because wasnt sure if plants in the 7/8 week of flowering would be using nutes at the same rate as plants in week 1/2...I was also told to add just a tad more nitrogen around week 3/4 than the bloom nutes have to make up for any "withdrawl" the plant might be going through after the nute switch.

I also have water and a drain available in my room so switching out a res is no problem, besides, I am a stay-at-home dad so time isnt really an issue.

I relly appreciate all the feedback and will be ordering a pump on payday and will let yyou know how ig goes.....smoke on:joint:

ahhhh.... thats kewl your doing a rotating system... yeah gotta have 4 diffrent rez's like that.. i'm thinking about doing a coco system like that.... i was thinking coco cuz i think it will be easyer to move the plants around.. less muss less fusss... that and canna nutriants are designed for bud.. plus i figure i can floral feed, to make up for any lack of nutriants from one plant to another..

what kinda beans are you using? what strain?

i didn't realise you were doing a roatating system , my bad i shoulda asked more info.. i reallly think that by having a rotating system a person can maximize there yeild.. cuz plants are diffrent sizes at diffrent stages of growth... so moving plants in and out to maximize on space, its someting i hav been thiking about getting into... i'm just lazzzzy...... ... i'm getting to be all about the 5 galon buckets so i can move the plants around.. i think the coco willl be the easist thing for me when doing a rotating garden... just think of the plants all being diffrent sizes... once again just some food for thought, i get stoned and type fast....

i'm lookin forward to seeing how things turn out

Let me ask you another question....germinating seeds..
I've been using the paper towel method and then moving to the plugs, inserted into the net pots and covering with clay pellets. Is there any way to get around using those plugs or rockwool? In otherwords, after I have a nice long taproot, can I just bypass the plug or rockwool and go straight to DWC in the pellets?

yeah man, to me thats what its alll about.... i havent tryed it with out the hydroton clay pelets, simply cuz you need something to support the plant with... , now i have been looking at neoprene inserts.. thats what i'm going to use this time, with minimul hydroton pelets, reason being... the neoprene will help keep out any bugs that may decide they want to live in my net pots.. but to get back to your queshtion...

this si what i do...
i veg the plants in vermiculite for about 2 weeks...using floral nova nutriants (there good for bolth soil and hydro) soo, i build small plants with big roots... since there is no dirt, when it comes time to put the plants in the net pots with the grow rocks for the hydro system i just warsh off all the vermiculite, and put the plants in the pots with the clay balls... i do it in a bowl of ph ballanced watter... you know like when your in a swimming pool your hair is all over the place.. well same thing with the roots... you place the roots alll over in the caly balls.. put the plant down low in the net pot.. even hang some root out the bottom.... the point is.. you get this massive build up of root, on a small plant... then when you hit that root with the hydro, it makes things go 2 times faster, its like the difrance between using a 1/4" straw and a 1/8" straw to drink a milk shake... right off the bat, your not gona get much out of the smaller system.. but if you have a bigger root system on a smaller plant going into a hydro ssytem.. expechialy DWC in my experances... the plants will get way more stacks, i recently did an exparament, where all my plants but one were veged like i;m saying.. and one seedline from the same batch of seeds was tossed in, it was just started 2 weeks later... it was amazing the diffrance in the plants.. the ones that were vegged longer out of the hydro system to develop roots became much nicer plants 3 times the amount of branches.. its like the hydro system blew it the plants up to be miniture jungles.. where the one that was started later, it had about a 1/3 of the stacks... its arms were bigger, but there were less of them... i duno.. personal perferance i guess.. i'm all about growin shrubs... i'd like to pull 1lb per dwc bucket my next go... using 600w per dwc .... how many watts are you using per bucket?

ohh i was stoned.. on germiniation, i just leave seads sit in watter for 2 days, till they sink... and i start to see little sprouts come out, then i'll put the seeds into some vermiculite, like i'll take a tupper ware container, put some vermiculite in it, plant the seeeds in it, put it in a nice warm area but not too warm like 76 degreese or so give or take a little... i put the lid over the tupper ware to make a humidity dome if need be.. ... i wait 2 - 3 days for them to sprout, as they sprout, i move them to small plastic pots... where they grow for about 1 - 2 weeks to develop roots, then i put them into the system the way i said above.. then batabing botta boooom, its time to fill up the growroom... veg them for 3 weeks... flower them for 7 weeks.. smoke kief till it runs out.. hope another crop is done before that time..
