I also snapped this screenshot while comparing a DE 100W gavita and the lights i ordered. with 200w less power consumption, it seems like its going to put in some work!

very true, also "comfort" is a factor in my grow. my roomate has to sleep in the same room as the tent, our house does not have AC and it gets in the 100s in the summer and an HPS would just make that room unbearable! I just ordered 800w of cob "equivalent" to 1600w of HPS, we're putting it in a 4x4 flower room, installing and flipping by the end of the week, ill post the results!
How does one determine equivalent?

Pretty sure thats an old led trick (equivalent), but none the less you should do real well. Sounds super exciting!!! Are you going to build this fixture or buy it?
No, i know what you mean, i did a lot of research and yes almost all the big name LED manufactures spew random trash numbers out. which is why i wanted to build my own COB setup, however i dont have all the tools, time, and room for error to do a DIY, so after a lot of research i found a couple manufactures that use CREE CXB LEDs and their numbers seem legit and match those of DIYers here on RIU. i ended up buying this 4-pack from @GoGreenLEDs http://www.gogreenleds.com/store/p7/4_pack_of_200W_4_COB_lights.html

That's a damned good question you just asked there, good Sir. I'm glad you asked!

I can tell you that very question had me pondering for YEARS. Along with the one about why some watts feel hotter than others, even though supposedly they're all the same to the HVAC system.

And the answer I came up with was that I just wasn't ever going to be satisfied with any conversion factor, interpolation of graphs, statistics, light meter plots, anecdote, claims, no... nothing.

So what's left? The head to head, of course!

AND, in one corner, 5400W of '860W' CMH, previously revealed to be pulling 1080W-1100W apiece. In the opposite corner is the svelte newcomer COB LED, also packing 5400W of verified draw from the wall.

SAME WATTS. It was the only head to head that made sense. Everything needs to be the same; Same 6 trellis panels, same 6 plants of the same strains on them, same RDWC, same environment, same nutes, same growing style, same lucky underpants worn on alternate Tuesdays. At half mast.

And sooooooooo we'll know in a few weeks what the fuss is all about. I'm not saving one single solitary watt on the light setup itself, so I'll know the score based on how the chillers respond and of course how the plants respond.

very true ttystikk i dont think anyone has yet to do a completely unbiased, completely identical, COB VS HID grow yet, which would settle a lot of debate, and start many more. Have you done this yet? where could i see the results?

You doing these vertical grows? I'd like to see results , I have never used a CMH but heard mixed reviews about them. Good luck.

Yet low frequency square wave can drive a DE just fine. Isn't that right, @Revolution Micro ?

Y'all might giggle at this news; the ONLY direct competitor I am aware of to your square wave tech at the 1kW output level has discontinued their product. Yes, the Horti Platinum thouie is no more! Dumb move, if you ask me.

Guess someone else is just going to have to step into that market with an affordable, powerful, efficient, technically advanced product. Any ideas who might fit the bill? :bigjoint:

Can you show where your getting the info on the platinum being discontinued?

No, then we'd be making space heaters, not lights.
Nope, it's ALL heat. Horror of horrors, but it is ... Think about it this way -- if you have a black box with cables going into it, and you measure 1000W of electrical power going into the black box, unless the box has some way for that power to do some external work, you've heated the box up 1000W worth.

Not very intuitive, but true nonetheless. If the load in the black box is a light, motor, jackhammer or really loud amplifier cranking Deathmetal, the room still heats up 1000W worth.

This is a grower question I get a lot -- how many BTUs/Hour does XX light put out at 1000 Watts? They're all the same -- 3414 BTU/h per kilowatt.

I think you missed my point. I get quite a lot of "this is the only way" sort of thing on forums. My point is that there's not a single, this-is-best-for-all solution. My point with COB is that it's not a technology per se, but an assembly technique. There seems to be a lot of confusion on this point. I do like the things, they're a helluva lot easier to deal with than individual dice.

I wonder if they're be any interest in doing a Kit-Build LED fixture? The DIY audio guys do that a lot, but I haven't seen too much of that here.
