Highest watt led in small cab?

My cab is size is 30"h 30"l 25"d and I am looking at the 135w UFO. I know this will be sufficient but I see for not too much more I can get a 300w led. Would this generate to much heat? I'm using a few small 120mm pc fans for cooling. With such a small space would I notice a difference in yield or would my GPW just drop between the two lights? Thanks in advance.


garden type will be a sog.
running 15 small plants.
soil
No co2 so heat would be an issue.

So i researched this further and as others have stated LEDs put off about 50% as much heat as an hps. So a 300w led would put off the same heat as a 150w hps. Should work with my space.

The only question now is will i benefit from the extra watts. 1 gpw would be ~51 grams. (Leds wattage is not rated accurately ie 3w led =1.7w x 30 leds) I think that's correct.

With the thought above I was looking at a 500 watt. The heat should produce an equal amount of a 250w hps and using my formula Above I would use ~283w. Or 12 pots producing 3/4 oz a piece ~ 1gpw.

I guess it really boils down to the maxuim yield from the cramped space.

These are my compiled thoughts hope it makes sense. All thoughts and comments welcome. Thanks in advanced.

hi im about to buy leds myself but power consumption is my limiting factor and alot leds are shit. leds can burn out. if 1 does and its power supply is Current regulated power supplies: These are the correct type to use with leds. The current is set to the correct value, for example 700mA for 3 watt leds, and the power supply then adjusts the voltage to maintain this current exactly. If a led shorts out the power supply will instantly adjust to compensate – protecting the remaining leds.
2. Voltage regulated power supplies: These can be used but are not a good idea. These put out a constant voltage and are usually used with a resistor to match/lower the output of the power supply to the correct voltage for the leds. There are two problems with using this type of power supply. Firstly if a led fails the power supply does not compensate and the rest of the leds may blow. Secondly the voltage the leds need CHANGES over the life of the led! During the first 200 to 300 hours the leds undergo a process known as burn-in, and the voltage required to run them DECREASES by about 10%. This means that while the leds may draw the correct current when the light is built, over the next few weeks the current will slowly increase and the leds will either fail or have their. it part of an artical i founld. i put it in the new to led.... page 13. have a read.

You guys are on the right track

Speaking from exp UFOs blow.. no matter how you put it, you are going to be better off with a panel style LED to kind of fit your square feet a bit better.

Kessils and UFOs give off a circular footprint with a very limited "saturated" diameter, the rest is wispy...airy... ugh.....

-Cidly's a good source for cheap, but reliable panels (allows custom ratios)
-Hans and Astir are some perfect micro grow panels (again, custom ratios...if you know what you need..)

I am personally not a fan of em...but... Blackstar Chrome's seem to be decent... but you could probably swipe a BS240 off ebay for just under 200.

If you are not wanting to fully leap into the LED market, one of those choices would probably suit you...

though I would say Astir knows their shit, and shouldnt even be referred next to Blackstar.

Now... if you are wanting this for a primary light source... and are planning to run this for a long time... first off...

for us previous HID ppl... we need grounds to know how much is 'nuff... I always ran by wpsf, always shooting for 50 for veg, 80 for flower... (fuckin 120+ for CO2!?!? has anyone done this!?)

Well, in the LED market, Ive seen ppl narrow down to 30-70 would be the equivilant to that... DO NOT TAKE THIS AS A GUIDELINE, this is merely an estiimate that I've noticed to trend along..

I am a wpsf whore, used to run a 400w HID combo in 3.905 sq ft, then 290w of LED's (two seperate panels), NOW I just upgraded to 390w in a 3.905 sq ft cabinet.

smokkin: With the power supply your referring to how do I know who carries what type? The company I looked at are not giving the actual facts. They only advertise the "check mark" features that impulsive buyers are looking for. I did read through the thread your referring to( as much as a low attention span pot head can). Thank you.

REAL IR chips are a ways away from being affordable enough to be used in panel style LEDs... sales gimmick as of now...

The first one's seem to have too much blue in them; I had a panel that LOOKED exactly like that (GLH Spectra), that was notorious for the... well...notorious LED bleaching.

Too much blue, and too concentrated of nm's... was the cause of it..

They do say you can get custom ratio's, I would get much more white (though they do not tell you how much of each is in there in the first place...sketchy...)...

The second looks like a gimmick in it's own... doesn't give enough information.... saw it has "UV and IR" though (sarcastic thumbs up!) lol

Damn market... some are learning that Honest Results sell more than anything.

Seriously, you are looking at buying a "full life" panel for a couple hundred bucks... look into the higher brands.. like you said, most things are from china, but it doesnt mean it is made the same..

First I'm very new but this is what I have found. I have a small cabinet, I was real worried about the heat from the big lights so I went with a 300 watt, 100 3 Watt LED. I'm fairly poor so I went after much debate with a China knock off light. (I paid 227.00 on ebay) When I put my little starter plants in the LED after they where about three inches high the light for some reason the LED light started to kill the seedlings. I moved them back under the CFL area in my cabinet. Second try they survived. I found that the LED light has a hard time getting through the plants upper canopy. I've added a 200 watt cfl, a 125 watt cfl and one more 100 watt cfl. The heat gets to about 86 during the day and drops to ambient temp at night.

Also keep in mind achieving a gram per watt from your grow is very difficult especially if your using LED's or CFL. Not saying this can't be achieved but in such a small area it would tough.
