How To: DWC

I'm not sure how you figure that putting your buckets in a pool of water to chill them will cause problems. For one its on the outside of your Rez. Two use clean water and change it out every so often. Don't get your water from a mud puddle and use it for the life of your plant and your not going to have any problems. People seem to forget plants normally grow outside in dirt. They don't need to be sterilized to grow. If you're worried about algae or bacteria add some bleach to your chiller pool. It's not going in your bucket so its not going to hurt anything.

My friend is having trouble with his DWC. He's using Home & garden nutes. He has some other plants in DWC with different nutes (cheaper) which are doing great. He said the plant on H&G nutes was fine in the am but when he checked in the evening it was wilted like a soil plant that hasn't been watered. He had done a water change 3-4 prior. PH, Temp, and PPM all seem fine. Anyone have an idea what maybe wrong?
I believe we have solved the problem. The plant was moved to a new rez which was made from a Lowes bucket. Lowes and home depot buckets are not food grade. The problem is they have chemicals that will leach into your water and kill plants. I use 10gal sterilite totes which work great. If your not sure if a container is food grade you're better of spending a bit more to be sure!

well, i know most plastic containers have the codes on the bottom somewhere. If someone knows where to find the information on the codes, it may prove useful.

Personally I've never used them. After the last few horror stories I've heard my girls are staying in food grade! People play Russian Roulette and live to tell the tale as well. It's just not worth saving a dollar or 2 if there is the risk of losing a plant 1/2 way through flower or even just stressing them and losing yield. Fred Meyer sells the sterilite tubs I use for $5.88 with a lid. A Lowes bucket & lid is gonna cost around $4-4.50 There are tons of ways to save without risking your plants health. I really don't think DWC is expensive enough to worry about cutting corners. I run 2 tubs on one 20-60gal air pump from Walmart $10.52. Throw in a couple bucks for air stones, net pots and medium it comes in at less than $40 for 2 10gal setups. I'm not telling anyone how to run their grow. Just passing on some sad stories apparently caused by cheap containers. I'm not out to drop the price on your Lowes stock portfolio lol.

I hear the buckets from big box stores like Lowes & Home Depot are grade 4. Food grade is #2 so you want to stick with 2 or 1 I guess. Not sure what #1 is so don't quote me on that. But stick with #2 and you'll be good.

Ive done 10's of grows in homedepot and lowes buckets and never had a single problem, actually worked great. Now im using the 10 gallon buckets and they just are too much to move around and change locations, water ect...Back to the 5 gallon buckets next run but im curious as to all this water coolin issues. Ive never had a chiller and never had problems with my water, i have exaust out of the light and my room stays at a steady 74 degrees. Is this because other rooms are hotter or whats the deal with that? Such a simple system almost just set it and forget it, though i dont i like to keep an eye on my plants several times a day but this system has been great to me and wouldnt change to anything else..BTW lowes buckets are a little thicker and painted to less light gets into the bucket compaired to the home depot buckets but they have both worked wonderfully for me 10's of times...

start under CFL...so you can put the light close at first...wait until you see about 3 to 4 nodes and then MH it up!..this will prevent stretching in the begining stages of growth...just an add in

hi VO your thread rules the freakin planet man awesome.

this is my first post, relatively new member with bad grammer and spelling haha,
right so ill get to the point...

i have be growing in soil not liking it much had hermies and crap yields now i know that this is all by my own fault but ive always been one to learn through error.

ok so im planning on doing a dwc system im tossing up between 4 multi plant res's with 8 plants in each.

at present i have 10 indica aruora seedlings, i only wish to veg for 2 weeks and flower for 6 to 9 as i want to keep the cycle short but im now thinking that maybe just 4 and veg for 6 weeks, what would you recomend? id value your input as you seem to know your shit.

I have a 600wat growlush, and an area of about a 2m2 i intend to sub co2 during veg, and to use chems not organic,

my plan for 4 large plants is 20ltr buckets with two air stones each i have a 400ltr per hour air pump.

does this sound operable what sorta yeld would 4 to 6 week veg give min to max?

lots of questions sorry if it didnt make sense just smashed back so of my last harvest white widow not bad just not enough of it.

4 week veg prolly for space reasons, the extra couple weeks would increase your yield but large plants in DWC are a pain in the ass

a month veg should yield you ounces.. per plant, and that's with marginal error room

If your having these problems with soil i would suggest you skip hydro or your really going get pissed. Most of that i would pin on your strain choice though.

I had a couple shitty years outdoors before I came indoors. Then I had about another year of frustration before the VO Grow really got stable and I knew wtf I was doin.

There are the few out there that can have great first times with DWC, although I could never have.

My first 3 runs were DWC and they were beautiful.. My trick was to keep the water cool under 70 degrees at all times.

yeah the strain was unknown at first as it was a clone i just snapped off a random bush i found growing.

Id really like to get around 2pound per grow so any advice on how i should do my set up oh i have since im thinking of trying dwc scrog what do you think?
thanks alot guys its great to have knowledgeable people to harass .

sorry meant to add i have now got seeds from nirvana and they seem to be pumping will put up pics soon they are 3 weeks into veg at present

Hey guys, sorry if this has been asked in this thread already. I've been using dwc for about a year now and was wondering if a top drip is overkill or a waste of time on a dwc. I'm using one as we speak for the extra o2, but is it wasted???
