Howard Zinn - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Excerpt-

As a historian, Zinn came to believe that the point of view expressed in traditional history books was often limited. He wrote a history textbook, A People's History of the United States with the goal to provide other perspectives of American history. The textbook depicts the struggles of Native Americans against European and U.S. conquest and expansion, slaves against slavery, unionists and other workers against capitalists, women against patriarchy, and African-Americans for civil rights.

In the years since the first edition of A People's History was published in 1980, it has been used as an alternative to standard textbooks in many high school and college history courses, and is one of the most widely known examples of critical pedagogy. According to the New York Times Book Review it "routinely sells more than 100,000 copies a year".

We have got to be the only country that lets that kind of crap take place.

History is supposed to be written by the winners, and people, guess what, we are the winners.

Though if they are using that as a textbook, how do they try to fit it into a curriculum that actually discusses history. That only really covers.... maybe a 1/4th of American History and really leaves out the good parts, like the Revolutionary War, the War of 1812, Most of the Civil War, World War I, World War II, the Korean War, the Vietnam War, the Gulf War.

The excerpt you are referencing is from Wikipedia- hardly a reputable source. I have never heard of the People's History of the US being used as the sole text book of any course, much less a high school history class. It would, as you have stated, be a completely inadequate source of historical knowledge. Another point you made, that "History is supposed to be written by winners..." is exactly why Zinn wrote his book in the first place- a limited representation of history based on the "winner's story" is reprehensible to any serious study because the goal of learning history is to gain a comprehensive understanding of human past in order to accurately evaluate why and how we are in our current situation, as well as how to direct ourselves in the future. A limited version of history leads to limited decisions, which may account for many of the problems that we see in modern government and society.

Dissent is the highest form of patriotism.

This is one of his, Zinns, "insights".

What about the posted excerpt belies Wiki's credibility? The fact that you have "never heard it" before?

Sounds like you're voting for Obama. What do you find attractive about His policies?
What makes it sound like I am voting for Obama? I would rather NOT vote for him, but may end up doing so. I was just hoping that someone who is already decided could explain why.

Look around, listen.......the reasons to vote for Obama echo throughout these hollow grounds.

No, it is because wikipedia is not accepted as a reference in any reputable work. Regardless of my logically weak personal addition, the point still stands.

Why? Because I asked decided McCain voters to support their convictions in a thread titled "I'm voting for McCain"? I wasn't being sarcastic.

Or because I added on to an incomplete idea that another poster made about history?

Or are you referring to the tone set by other peoples' posts? If so, please don't make assumptions about me based on other people.

I'm just trying to ask a legitimate question.

100% fucking spot on dude, you can't talk about our history without looking at the entire scope of it.

And, well, same point really and you expanded on it so eloquently; you can't talk about our history without looking at the entire scope of it.

YouTube - "Fundamentals" Ad

is it his economic brilliance that has wowed you
I find it very deeply unsettling that John McCain thinks that our economy is strong. Allow yourself to see just how frightening this is. Bear-Stearns, Countrywide Financial, Merrill-Lynch, American International Group (AIG) all ACQUIRED BECAUSE THEY WERE GOING TO GO BANKRUPT.

Here are the ones that actually have GONE BANKRUPT; Metropolitan Savings Bank, NetBank, Miami Valley Bank, Douglass National Bank, Hume Bank, ANB Financial, First Integrity Bank, IndyMac Bank, First National Bank, First Heritage Bank, ...First Priority Bank. ELEVEN BANKS/FINANCIAL INSTITUTIONS... This is utter madness, mind you this has ALL BEEN IN THE TIMESPAN OF LESS THAN A YEAR!

And now, Lehman Brothers, a ONE HUNDRED AND FIFTY-EIGHT YEAR OLD FINANCIAL INSTITUTION IS FILING FOR BANKRUPTCY PROTECTION (bank/credit union/whatever number TWELVE). This is scary people and if American's don't fucking wake up now and realize that John McCain is NOT going to be the kind of problem solver we need, WE ARE GOING TO REGRET IT MORE THAN 'Dubbya' STEALING THESE LAST EIGHT YEARS!

Talk about ignorant! Do you know how fucking offensive that type of comment is to older people? Do you realize that because the national media, who happens to be in the pocket of the Marxist movement in the democrat party, are saying this same shit, they are losing the Senior Citizen vote for the Democrats? You think Florida is going to be close? Bwaaaaa! LMAO!

Only a freakin' Demobat could, on the one hand, rail against "racism," and then be stone-blind to his/her own ageism attitude. A pox on you. :finger: bongsmilie

OK, that's enough. I'm 68 and I think McSame is too old. I think Palin who basis her foriegn policy on ("I can see Russia from my front porch") is too stupid and McCain is way out dated as a leader. He has to have Lieberman whispering in his ear to not make fopaws. Like Bush before him, I'm pretty sure he has a voice in his ear when he gives speeches, you know Palin does. These are the best the rich folk can trot out to represent them, disgusting.

Dose anyone know of any country or any country leader that is PRO McCain ( I know they can't really pick sides but the French made it clear and its not that hard to tell country by country)

Who is in the international McCain fan base? Obviously a big majority of the WORLD is pro Barack but I just wanted to know of any international friends that John might have out there in the world who are backing him?

Yeah Palin as President. Her and God. Don't forget she believes that God guides Bush and I'm pretty sure she'd think the invisible man in the sky was guiding her also. Sure let's elect a right wing religious zealot, sounds about right..................Wrong!! Say, where was God when Bush decided to attack Iraq? Where was God when Bush and his cronies decided to let the corporations/Banking industry run wild? Where was God when Bush and his cronies decided to take our rights away? He must have been asleep. Anyone that thinks they are doing Gods will while running our country is a certified whack job. I believe this includes most republicans and for certain Sarah Palin.
