Jack the Ripper, Ketama, Afghan Kush Supersoil Grow in Autopots

Hola Rollers! We had so much fun with the Supersoil in Autopots last winter there was no question whether to give it another go this winter. Fall is upon us here at the base of the Flatirons and that means the weather is cooling off enough to put the Medshed back to work. Before that can happen, there needs to be a big cleanup project. Right now the shed floor is still littered in dried leaves and general garbage left over from the last harvest.

Here's a little info on the genetics, from the breeders' descriptions:

[FONT=Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif]Jack the Ripper is well named because it is absolutely killer weed. A true 8 week Sativa Haze the first thing growers notice is the incredible lemon smell and heavy resin production. It has been described by UK growers as the best 8 week haze ever produced.

This plant will produce triangle shaped spear buds that pretty much stopped active calyx growth early and produced copious amounts of resin instead, resin production was evident from day 12 in 12/12 but really started to fatten up the heads around day 50 or so.

I find it performs best unstopped with a long vegetive period. The high is very creeper at first you may think that its not so strong but then whammo...it hits you hard and there's no turning back then...you will be deep in thought and meditative for quite some time...the duration and intensity is strong and thought provoking.

5. Best way to grow- Untopped and vegged to a full bush.

Afghan Kush - World of Seeds

Originate from the mountain of hindu kush (North Afghanistan). Another indica of kush line, grows wildly in the valleys of armu darya, a border river with Tajikistan and Uzbekistan. This is a very stable variety, almost 100% indica, a fruit of successive cross-breds between kush varieties, that grow wildly close to each other in the limited geographical area. Very high hachis flavour and fragrance so we can consider it highly medicinal

Ketama - World of Seeds

Plant to the north of Morocco acclimatized since early 90's European latitudes, arduous and difficult as a lover of inert soils and stony and arid, dry climates. You do not need much watering or lot of fertilization to get big buds resinous. It follows from a pure lineage not hybridize, early production and very resinous. Very resistant to pests, is the most used by Moroccans to take one of the best hashish in the world ... Welcome to the path of Muhammad ... salam!

The 3 JTRs came up at the same time, one each of the Ketama and AK came up a day later. The other Ketama and AK came up a day after that.

In this picture the JTRs are in the back, Ketamas in the middle and AKs in front.

Fast forward to today (October 5) and I have culled the small AK and Ketama, transplanted into 1 gallon aeration pots (Roots) and watered once with Great White myco mix.

Pulling up a chair front and center for this thread. It will be interesting to see what those landraces do for ya....and of course the JTR will be dank as we all know. I really dug the way your plants were structured in the pb, dq, querkle grow and am excited to see how ya do it this time. Great start!

Ps....your story of getting silly on the pb tincture was great....thanks for posting that recipe. Much appreciated-

Glad to have you along bshdctr. I'm excited to see what the landraces do too. I can already see the JTR is much stronger out of the gates than the others. I'm thinking of topping the JTR to get 4 heads on it and maybe leave the other two to grow naturally. These plants won't be as big as last time around. I want to squeeze two crops out of the shed (for more variety in the jars) this winter so I won't veg this round very long. Maybe to 12" or so. I let the last round go to about 18" before I flipped 'em.

Yes - you do have to be careful with that PB. Sub was not joking in his catalog description when he said "not for occasional smokers"...

Hey folks - do any of you have experience with Ketama from World of Seeds? I've scoured the internet and come up short on details. The only thing resembling a smoke report I found was from some guy saying it makes him horny. To be honest, that "review" was one of the things that swayed my decision toward this strain. I'm looking to replace an excellent Kush cut that I lost due to lack of planning. The distinguishing characteristics of that cut were a strong narcotic effect that literally delivered mind/body separation, and an aphrodisiac effect. The buds looked similar to an Afghan Kush, with a bit more coloring that resembles the pictures (limited and poor quality) I've seen of Ketama.

Anyone with Ketama experience please chime in...

Thanks

Oh man I am excited for this grow. Ever since I got my hands on some JTR at a Boulder dispensary, I have been in love with the plant. Do you do all your grows from seed to flower, or do you clone your strains and run them for a while?

Hey CAS - good question on seed vs clone. I am currently doing everything from seed, except for the DQ I revegged and ran outside this summer. I don't really want to keep mothers around and don't grow continuously enough to keep a plant going through cloning. I'm actually trying to figure out my long-term approach. I was spoiled for quite a while by having a buddy with a room full of mothers (over 20) who let me take cuts when I wanted. He shut down his operation so for now I'm going the seed route.

Autopots or smartpots bruz? they look like smarts to me... www.autopot.com.au got rather excited when you said autopots...
Hold tight there maddog. The smartpots are just for starters. The autopots come into play when I transplant to bigger containers. Maybe I need to change the title to read "smartpots, then autopots"...;-)

FYI - my earlier journal gave a view of my general operation and when/how I do the transplant. I'm thinking about mixing things up this time and try to turn one or two of the Autopots into air-pruning pots. So, I guess then it would be smartpots inside autopots. We'll decide on that one later. For now, I'll keep the journal name as-is.

Hey maddog - I can say with 100% confidence that autopots work for cannabis (and tomatoes, and peppers, and basil, and cucumbers, and so on). I've been growing with them for over 10 years now. I've only grown organically with them the last 2 years and that is where you can get in trouble with the autopots. They can get soggy at the bottom if you don't manage your medium. I always add at least an inch of hydroton on the very bottom layer to keep the oxygen level up down there. I also add extra perlite to the whole pot to give better drainage/aeration. Once you get it dialed in, with simple soil amendment to manage drainage/aeration, they are total no-brainer systems. I've been away for 2 weeks at a time and never had to worry about anything with my autopots keeping the plants happy.

Here's what I pulled out of the garden tonight. We've got a frost warning going so I pulled everything that was ready. We've got jalapenos, banana peppers, yellow bell peppers and cucumbers. There were 4 more cucumbers but the kids ate them for dinner.

BTW - these were all grown in Autopots.

Tomorrow I'll be slicing and freezing all the peppers to be used for fajitas this winter.

Thanks Bobo. I snapped some shots of the kids today but haven't had the chance to post them yet. Hopefully tomorrow. We've got three soccer games going so it will be a bit busy round here.

Hi All - Here is a quick update. Everyone is looking healthy and happy - but the AK could look better.

I've given everyone another shot of Great White since the last update. I also decided to top the JTRs and leave the AK and Ketama untopped. I think that will give us a nice even canopy. These photos were taken before the topping...
