as far as yields, i'm on my first run with the SG602 and have 2 of my favorite girls under it, grown for 2 years under HIDs, so I know her very well and will know the differences in structure and weight. come end of May I'll know for sure if the investment was worth it.

btw - if I just had the $$$, I would switch from HID to very hi output t-5's so fast it'd make yo head do a Linda Blair spin around
They also only come in 2' lengths (too short for my cab) and 4' lengths (too long) -- that is called a limitation. In contrast, I have 4 240w blackstars that almost perfectly fit my cab. Nothing wrong with HOs though they are just a choice. LEDs are the more expensive option that doesn't mean they're worse.

I don't think LED's are as inherently efficient as some people believe. Due to the nature of the bulbs you cannot really vertically hang them (actually current designs wouldn't let you at all) at high intensities, at least not at the moment. Perhaps in the future.

I'm quite sure you will get more production per square foot AND energy input hanging vertically with conventional HIDs than using LEDs horizontally.

The whole thing about LEDs reducing heat isn't true if you replace 600w of hid with 600w of led overall heat is going to be about the same. Its just spread out more with the led. Also you need more watts of led light to replace HID from what I have seen I have seen people pull 1.3 gpw with 600w hid in soil, never seen anyone with led yeild this good. And check this out http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=udD0uhRwMU8 this guy pulled 38.4oz with a 600w MH ! If you find and led grow that is this efficient and isn't marketing bull please point me to it.

I am running over 500ws of ACTUAL led light (960 watts of bulbs, around 520-560w of actual light output) - FOUR 240w blackstars, producing LESS heat than a 400w digital HID in a cooltube with 252cfm inline fan venting it directly out of the cab. I was told by multiple people I would have heat problems as bad or worse than the 400w. Glad I didn't believe them. The 4 blackstars sit in there with NO active venting produce less heat than the 400w with active venting. I really hate when people talk about stuff they don't know. Perhaps this was true with old models -- my units are 2012s -- certainly not true now unless you just have an inefficiently designed light. The way mine are designed the hot air is pushed to the top of the cab as well due to the way the LED air in take/fans draw the air. That is on the cheap old blackstar. I imagine on a higher end light with better heat sinks and design, they are even more heat efficient.

Physics state that 500w of power will produce more radiant heat than 400w, LEDS produce less direct heat, but the radiant heat is the same regardless. It's the same as the people who say 600w of CFL's produces less heat than a 600w HPS...no they produce roughly the same.

Long story short, LEDs are awesome, but overstating them and people being disappointed hurts their reputation more than anything else. And an aircooled 400w HPS/MH produces less heat than 100w of CFLs, even if you run it on a 600w ballast, so recheck your figures.

Watt for watt that may be true in a hypothetical matchup, but overall heat no way. First of all, on an HPS the heat comes from one source. On the LEDs the heat is spread out and vented in each light -- each of my LEDs has *THREE* fans venting air straight up. Second the light in hid is not the only thing producing heat -- ballast does as well. Last, you go recheck your figures. In *MY* cab more watts produced less heat for MY setup. So for *ME* they are better. Do you have any actual experience with LEDs replacing similar wattages or are you just talking out of your ass?

How big is your grow room?

each person has a diff set of parameters in their grow room. One person may get little heat build up while another gets more due to the environment. I have 3 led units and they build up heat in MY cab without ventilation. For others it may be different.

heat load will depend on the lamp used? and cause a rise of 10+ degrees vs another bulb? not sure where you are going with that one.

I'm saying the heat generated by one LED manufacturer's light and another is going to vary depending on the ventilation, chips, heatsinks and design. Is this thing on?? I thought this was an LED thread :)

As for HIDs, bulbs are RELATIVELY equal (though manfucturer and amount of energy going through based on ballast is going to vary) but there's huge differences between different ballasts putting off heat. My old non digital HID ballast put off quite a bit.

ahhh, I didn't understand the short statement "It'll depend on your individual lamp too.", just needed clarification for what you meant. i took 'lamp' as 'bulb', not ballast or individual manufacturer of LEDs. makes more sense now :)

Yeah maybe initially that is true, but without ventilation the heat will build up to roughly the same. Check out the Second Law of Thermodynamics if you don believe me, all energy including light becomes heat.

PCs have a million cooling fans and still heat a sealed room, with LEDs the heat is spread better, but in a closed system without ventilation they will heat up to the same as HIDs of equivilent wattage after a while.

That is unless your LEDs come with a micro-black hole generator to remove the heat ;)

my room is sealed and not vented. i stick by what I said - a 600w HID (3amps), with ballast in that room heats up to 95+; my stealthgrow 602 LED (3amps also) heats up the same space to 82 MAX (same temps outside the space and outside).

You cant run a sealed room with CFLs without AC, seriously. How do you renew CO2 levels since your room is "sealed"?

And before the "you're an LED hater" comments start, I'm buying two Blackstars for supplementary light for my flower rooms for my next grow...but the assertion that any electronic device is "thermal neutral" in a small sealed room is ridiculous.

Even a games console heats up after a little while...

it puts out heat, but my room is in my garage and it's winter still, so I'm not saying it's thermal neutral at all. and for CO2, I open the door a couple times during lights on and will be adding an exhale bag shortly to boost CO2. dunno what to tell ya, i specifically recorded outdoor temps, garage room temps and flowering room temps to compare. maybe the difference is between magnetic and digital/electronic ballasts - i only had a magnetic to test with and most digi's run a bit cooler, but i don't know how much the difference would be (enough for a 10deg swing?)
