I just started some seeds in an egg shell carton they are growing and starting to stretch, they are 4inchs long and they have their two leafs. I want to transplant them into bigger pots.

How deep do I plant, I don't want to kill them!

4 inches already? what kind of light are you using? I'm having trouble understanding how you're using an egg shell carton, explain. And if you're in soil and you're transplanting, just transplant so that it's even on the top. I'm sure you won't have to go deep at all since I assume using an eggshell carton you're not using a lot of soil.

4 inches is stretching too tall mate. You need to put into bigger individual pots and either 1. put the lights closer or 2. get better lights. Don't worry about transplanting just be gentle as u can and plant them with an inch or whatever showing but unless you fix the light issue they will continue to stretch taaaaaaaaaaaaalllll

Let them grow bigger. Its going to be hard to get them out so you may want to cut the carton pockets out one by one to transplant. Just let them grow for a while so the roots get a chance to tie up all the dirt so everything doesnt dissolve in your hands when you go to transplant. I just transplanted a whole pile of stuff and i did it a little early and the roots were falling apart. Poke some holes in the bottom of your egg container big enough for roots to get through and when theres roots coming through you should be good. Post a pic on luijis thread if you dont want to start a journal, ill see it :)

Wow. Those need to be transplanted burying about 75% of the stem. But like Ninja said you gotta have enough roots to hold the little soil ball together. When you decide to replant maybe you could slide a spoon under them and get them out more or less intact.

Dig the lettuce in the background, I've been wanting to multi use my space.
Any problems growing side by side?

Just did my first germination.

I used the Jiffy pellets and dome.
Heating pad

popped in 2 days, banging on the dome in 4.

Roots showing out the pellet in 6, transplanted and kickin butt on day 10.

I was worried as I had never germ'd anything, read RUI and this was the method I tried.

Thanks Folks !

Well if you get bugs, you get bugs. Thats the only downfall i could think of. Spray with neem oil every coupleish weeks and you should be fine. That butter leaf lettuce grows great though. Theyre under t8s and they take about two months to be ready to eat. All you need for them is a one gallon container :):):)

What do you think is the best way to start from seed??
My opinion put seed directly in soil in some type of peat pot filled with "starter mix". Fitting the peat pot inside a plastic cup helps keep it moist.

The big advantage to peat pots is virtually 0% transplant shock unless you are a real fuck up.

It might be even easier to just slice up the side of the cardboard with a razor, and disturb the soil even less, but YA, get your lights a LOT closer, and read the sticky on burying long stems in the "Newb" section.

Dude weren't you just giving me advice on a possible "powder mold" prob? And your beans are in an egg carton?...and I read the article where you got that info, but there was a better "organic" solution...milk!!! lowfat 1% milk. 1 part milk 9 parts PHed water and foliar mist...but as it turns out I just need to up my N intake...
Now about those eggs...I mean beans...lol..I started my latest 15 day old in a 2 gal bucket, yep, I said F it I ain't transplanting for a minute at least..
