The knife was a totally prop, i wouldn’t expect people to cut into this one, as it was for a chef he just wanted the look of the butcher block. The finish was waterbase on this one. Though I’ve been wanting to do one that you could totally abuse, like the Wood I’ve seen guys rolling cigars on in Mexico. There’s a lot of blunt rollers I think there would be a cool cross over but I’m still trying to figure out what wood I would need for that abuse. Super dense.
The knife is from DGBladeco on Instagram His work is inspiring.

Purple Heart sapwood with burl slices in the corners. Tool holders with grommets.
Do you know the source of the Burl, root burl? above ground or upper trunk ? tree spices? the type of grub ?

I have a pile of water oak burls but I haven’t cut many of them as I like the look of the upper trunk burls completely intact. And also I can get really awesome pieces of crouch ( as much as I want because I have a wood mixer ) . I also like working with beetle kill pines, the pine beetle makes really cool black holes ( like the ambrosia in popular) the its looks pretty cool to.666D80BF-DDC8-4818-A93F-09858155CE14.jpegF62993FF-1F62-497E-9B4B-7155700D6C35.jpegF02AC83B-C0DA-46D6-AFCA-330477EC9633.jpeg

Top pic is a wormy pine box ( currently a toy box ) next is a crazy burl that lives on the front porch sitting atop a 10” thick 40” dia. oak burl end table with hollow oak pedestal. In the background is a woodpecker with a chain hooked to his balls , when you pull his chain.... well let’s just say it makes some noise. Also a pair of boot shaped cedar shoe hooks for.... shoes of course.

Whoa. That is a massive burl! I actually don’t know much about the burls. Most of them were gifted to me by an old woodworker head who has been sort of a mentor of mine. Super deep guy who talks to me about the magic contained in roots that you can see when you cut them open. I’m still learning different ways of how to cut/slice/ work with them, each one so different and you have to stare at it until you see where the beauty will be.
I got a wormy pine beam rolling table I made last summer.

@BigCityGrow have you done or considered doing an epoxy river board ? That last post is a fine example of a board that would be perfect for just such a thing or as I like to make tables from boards that have splits or other defects, epoxy stabilizes and fills those imperfections or worm holes. It’s something I’ve done several times however I really like the rustic look and I like to show the wood in it natural form, so I usually sell or give away the refined pieces.

Yeah, I’d be down to work with epoxy more for some holes I encounter, I should do that. I just never really got into the river tables. They make them in my shop from time to time. I just feel like it’s a look that’s been done a lot, but then again maybe that sells really awesome and I should just do it.
