is there some trick to keep it from just shreading and falling apart when you remove the old roots?

ummm... not if you grew a big healthy strong plant.... it should split the rockwool...

plant is worth 300-3000 dollars.. rockwool 25 cents

lol, not concerned w/ the cost just didn't want to have a mountain of old rockwool to dispose of.

Rockwool is easy to get rid of. Shred it and break up how its trashed but not in your trash is best. tear it up and dump it in a dumpster somewhere.let it dry after yanking the roots best as possible and then run it over with the mover with mulch blade going then sprinkle it anywhere.You can simply bury it someplace.
