Regular vs feminised

So I’ve read a few times that people seem to think regulars produce better smoke in terms of effect than the feminised version.

Does anyone have experience with this?

The only real difference I've experienced is you get wider phenotypical variations in regs compared to fems. Like if I were to grow Kali Mist and I want a very sativa dominant phenotype it will be easier to find it with regular seeds from my experience.

Maybe not better but different.

Ive used feminised for a long time.

even used fems as mothers when I found a keeper etc.

at this present time I’m running 2x barneys BG41 and I’ve get 2 clones from each as a rinse and repeat scenario.

I can’t say I’ve been disappointed with fems but what I will say it depends a lot on the breeder and how long they’ve stabilised and pheno hunted for the females to cross with the fem pollen (that’s also been pheno hunted).

I haven't noticed any significant difference from females that I grew from regular seeds and the feminized seeds I made using clones of that same female. You can always get some variation as no 2 seeds are going to be identical regardless of the source. The main difference is that all the seeds grow female.

It's a crap shot either way. I have had good and bad smoke from both regular and feminized seeds. Feminized are just too convenient for me to go back to regular seeds.
If you don't need males then it only makes sense to grow regular seeds if feminized are not available for the strain you want. And even then no strain is really special enough to grow regulars and take a chance as there is always something else to grow that is available feminized.

I grow regulars but I have reasons for doing it. I want males. If I didn't I wouldn't grow them.

Yep Lotsa strains out there and too little time to waste my time with males as I only grow from seed currently and want different strains each grow. No need for males in my room. As the old sayin goes "Variety is the spice of life".

I always grow different strains and couldn't imagine growing the same thing each grow. But I have reasons for wanting males so I grow regulars.

It's easier for someone without a lot of breeding experience to pick a desirable female plant for breeding purposes than it is to pick an excellent male-picking males takes a lot of experience and practice. This is the reason you see a dozen new "breeders" popping up each week on IG or selling through Neptune, the "selection" work is already done for you if you are making fems from "elite" cuts, all you have to do is reverse and pollinate. This is exactly what most of the hype breeders are doing on IG with their new drops of 20 white truffle Xs or Apples and Bananas Xs. Keep in mind, these aren't "strains", just polyhybrid pollen chucks, which is much different from traditional breeding where you select for and against certain traits across generations, thereby improving the line. Either method can end in equally good bud, but one is a shortcut and one is the long road.

Anytime I run a new pack of one strain or another I have to make more seeds. I feel compelled to do it, I love it. Just the thought that I bought those damn beans for $75 and now I'll have a couple hundred more (which are now one step further down the path to hunting for fire and then stabilising it as an ibl) anyways - you need regs to do that and I'm too lazy to get chemicals to try to do reverses of fems. I have one or two promising crosses in my arsenal now that had a fem mum at the beginning. Damn, I have so many seeds I may as well start using some of them as birdseed in the backyard.

I always shake my head when I read posts where someone complains about having to cull the males they got from a pack of regular seeds. And then go on to say they're going to buy some "X" strain next. Just keep a damn male collect a little pollen and dust a branch or two or even the whole damn plant and have seeds for years.

Or take clones of the females, reverse one and pollinate another one. And wham bam thank you maam, more seeds. It's such a simple process.

If the Stargawg f2 male I have now turns out to be nice I may just keep a vial of pollen and unleash some on any of my upcoming Bodhi Banana Spliff X White Widow, these are just a couple weeks away from going to flip and I'll probably keep cuttings of any females that impressed later on.

I'm waiting for 3 to give up their gender right now, I've got 1 unique "Hammer Mitten" that was a freebie, and has the weirdest crinkly leaves I've seen in a long time, nice dense Indica leaning plant, stem rub smells of used motor oil. Hoping it's a male so I can chuck some pollen on a really nice female Ive got. I'll have the space shortly to do an open pollination. Hoping for a Blue Iguana x Hammer Mitten cross, I'll call it Reapers Sickle. I might also dust a few branches on my outside run this year. Making some of my own crosses and having something that you can't buy is what I'm looking forward to.

How late into flower can you wait to pollinate a plant? And how long do the seeds take to develop after the pollen has been dusted onto the pistils?

I wouldn't want to pollinate too early into flower, but I also wouldn't want to wait until week #12, either. What is the "sweet" spot for pollinating?

I pollinate early and then another dusting a week later or when a significant amount of new pistils have formed. Some plants it's minimal but some take a pollination and then just spit out another larger flush of pistils as if they're ready for more. I never harvest seeds sooner than 8 weeks. I wait until they're done for sure and are falling off the plant on their own.

I also feed seed plants much more than unpollinated plants.

That's almost the same as how I do it! Occasionally I get impatient and I pick a few early seeds out once I see they're good and brown.
Let's start a seed company!

If you are going to go to that amount of effort you might as well just keep taking clones.

Back in the day it was reckoned that regulars would yield slightly more than the fem version.
