Riverside's First Grow - Stealth Bookshelf w/ 180w Blackstar LED

I'm glad I ran across this thread. According to many posts I've read, growing nice buds is totally impossible under LEDs. Clearly you've proven them wrong.
I'm on my first indoor grow with a 400W HPS. Winter is fast approaching and the heat in my closet grow is barely under control. I can't imagine being able to do this with my current lighting setup in the summer months.
I'll definitely be getting an LED setup when the weather warms up next year.
Awesome!

Ditto, kick ass blackstar grow man.

The heat of the summer was one of the factors that led me (pun def intended) to ditch hps and get led. They're fantasticalicious for small home hobby gardens.

I know this was covered a couple pages back but I have a different solution for fungus gnats - works well too. Put a layer of perlite over the soil. The bugs live in the medium but have to crawl through the perlite to get into the air to fly around and bug (again with the puns) you. The perlite chops them up proper on their way out.

Cheers!

Damn, buds are looking good man!

Thanks!

You used the blackstar lighthouse 180w flower spectrum the whole veg cycle?
Sick first grow brother

Yep, from veg to flower.

Yea, after I read some of what was said here on the Blackstars I was like "gahhh why did I buy these?" but I think they're working pretty damned well, especially for a first grow. I'm thinking about going bigger next time with a 2x4 tent and getting a 400W CMH set-up and supplementing with this 180W. Really depends on how much I yield. The CMH sounds like a great solution to low heat, lots of light for much less than LEDs.

Hmm didn't realize perilite would work for that. All I saw was diatomaceous earth and I have no idea where to find that. The gnat problem went away when I started cleaning my soda cans and beer bottles before putting them in the recycling bin. But I will keep that in mind for next time.

Day 89 - 11/10 - Veg Time: 28 days - Flower Time 61 days

Think I said last time that GF would be ready for harvest in two weeks; I don't think it will be ready by this weekend. What do you all think? Probably needs 2 more weeks. And BS2....well she's definitely got a ways to go. Some of her pistils have begun browning at least, but she looks like she can get fatter. Or prettier; damn, she's ugly.

Such an awesome grow man! When I get some money here soon my next thing I want is an LED setup! Perfect for the hobby gardener! Wow those buds are looking great

240w Blackstar! 3" bilge fan! We are twins! I am gonna steal your idea of the speed control. Super props on the box brother! I'm building a freeZer Chest scroger because of the large foot print...

Thanks! Though in hindsight, buy a slightly better light ;)

Oh nice! I'll have to take a look at yours soon then. How loud is your 3" blower? I consider my 4" loud because it vibrates and has an awful whine to it. The next grow I will be looking for a quieter fan set-up and am curious how these bilge pumps compare to a can-fan. The speed controller was this things saving grace though.

Day 93 - 11/14 - Veg Time: 28 days - Flower Time 65 days

Entering week 9 now. I'm really hoping GF finishes by this weekend. Probably at 80% red pistils, but my eye loupe or my vision aren't good enough to tell if the trichs are cloudy yet. BS2 is starting to redden up though. 3 weeks left on it?

Very nice man. Can't believe thas led

By the way if u wanna do see what a CMH does. Stop by my grow. Bout to post new pics (links in my sig)

So far I've got about 6oz from phillips 330w cmh for 400w MH ballast (the one for hps ballast is ever better). All strains are kush so not the highest yeilding strains. I still got a lil more to trim and weigh also. So im pretty happy with my yeild especially for first time with these strains and new set up. Nugs came out super dense and trich production is amazing (people say flowering with mh will produce airy buds), it also dropped my temps by 5 F* compared to reg 400w. So I would def recommend getting a CMH (phillis retro 330w for hps ballast tto be exact). Check out www.advancedtechlighting.com. Thomas has some real good info videos on there on how CMH work.

Amazing job man! Very impressive to see what that 180w blackstar can do in the right hands!

Thanks! Certainly says a lot for first-time hands.

Day 110 - 12/1 - Veg Time: 28 days - Flower Time 82 days

Long overdue update. Had some people over for t-gives so couldn't really post last week. I was really hoping to chop GF the following weekend after I posted last, but she just wasn't ready. GF is going down for sure on Saturday though; stay tuned for her harvest pics. BS2...I dunno what is up with her. She's red all over but very few and small trichs. I am going to give her another week and chop her, for better or worse, because I'd like to have both of these plants dried and curing by the time I have leave for christmas. If she sucks, oh well. Brownie fodder I suppose.

Day 112 - 12/3 - Veg Time: 28 days - Flower Time 84 days

Chopped grapefruit this morning and a lovely smell of citrus filled my grow room. She's in the bud dryer now and I will get a weight for her once she's done.

Quick update: moved GF to the curing jars yesterday. Dried weight was around 25g :/ lower than I expected, but whatevs. I'd post a little more, but I'm a bit tired at the moment.

not bad.. not bad at all. I mean you only used 180w Blackstar, and you still have the BS2 weight to combine for the total grow...

Most importantly, or at least what I want you to feel the best about, is that your buds are some of the nicest looking LED buds I've seen... =D You have done a fantastic job here as far as I am concerned, and this grow is my all-around favorite LED grow that I have seen anywhere, for several reasons! Kudos to you for building an awesome DIY grow space, making efficient use of power, and yielding some beautiful buds!

Thanks bro. I hadn't looked at the results of many LED grows before this one, but I'm glad to hear that.

Day 120 - 12/11 - Veg Time: 28 days - Flower Time 91 days

Ok, BS2 is down yesterday after 91 days of flowering. Smelled really strongly of sour citrus, so even it doesn't look dank, it really smells strong. But I'm definitely excited to see how this one tastes. This one was much leafier than GF, and I wonder how that diploid bud is going to taste/smoke. Its just crammed with leaves in the middle on the sides; doubt it's going to be very good.

No smoke reports yet (haven't had time!) but BS2 is dried and in curing jars. So, final weights, and some numbers:

GF: 25g
BS2: 32g
Total: 57g

Just about where I thought I'd be actually, just a bit over 2oz. As far as the efficiency of the 180W Black Star goes, here's how it comes out:

We know the 240W Blackstar's actual power draw is around 133W (https://www.rollitup.org/grow-room-design-setup/432283-blackstar-240w-led-dissected-upgraded.html), 55% of the model's advertised draw. Using the same percentage for the 180W, the actual draw is 99W. So this grow comes out to around 0.58 g/W. I guess that's ok considering this is my first and I made a lot of mistakes: under watered, over watered, over nuted, didn't pH my water, standard noob mistakes. Glad the first one is under my belt now ;) Thanks for all the help and support from everybody!

Now what am I to do with all of this? bongsmilie
