Sleep - How much is enough?

I've heard a lot of mixed reviews on the amount of sleep we should be getting, so what do you think? What does science say?

People I've known who've been in the military say they're taught the human body only needs 4 hours of sleep each extended period of time, so for every 8-12 hours you're awake, 4 hours should be adequate.

I've heard health experts say 7-10 hours is the sweet spot.

I've heard people say increments of 4 awake, 4 asleep, 4 awake, etc... is the best way to go..

Finally, our ancestors pretty much went to sleep when it was dark and woke up when the sun came up, so I'd think something like that would be the most efficient way to sleep, right?

What does science say?

i dont know about science but 6-8 works for me always wake up before my alarm and feel fully rejuvenated. biggest thing i have found is getting up early is better. if i sleep late i feel shit all day. get up early and then at night you are genuinely tired and sleep better

i sleep 4-6 hours every 24 hours, sometimes i take a nap in between 2-4 hours but 4 hours is all i need when im tired i sleep thats all i do. i used to sleep longer when i was younger but its just a convenience IMO honesty i think is more to do with you daily workload than anything.

Hey, Pad! I've read so much shit on sleep, I don't know what's legitimate. I feel best at about 7 hours, but I can get by with 5 or more several days in a row. If I'm behind on sleep I take a nap for an hour or two, I love my naps more than my nightly sleep ;) Now that I'm out of the rat race, I've settled at 5am to noon. I've made my bedroom almost completely dark during the day and wear a sleep mask to simulate darkness. Works great...

My sleep is erratic, but it is usually 8 hours. I never get up at the same time each day for more than 4 or 5 days in a row. My sleep schedule is constantly on a slow rotation. I'll get up at 8am one day, few days later its pushed till 10 or so, before long i'm not getting up till 6 at night, and so on until it get's back to 8am again. I do tend to stay on nights for longer, and much prefer being up all night. It just seems like you can get away from the world better at night, when it's sleeping. You don't have to worry about Jehovah's witnesses knocking on your door, or the stupid neighbor kids trying to sell shitty wrapping paper. TV is also better at night. Compare 2pm television with 2am. There's skinamax, adult swim, and if your stoned it's really cool to watch that knife cut through tin cans. Afternoon television is nothing but soaps and women's cluck shows.

And the best trading hours on Forex is the middle of the night for me. But, I haven't gone that way. I am a 6am to 10pm clockwork. If I vary that even on the weekends, I don't like it.
