Stealth Question (From Newbie)

I have a 4x4 grow tent with a 6 inch inline fan. Yesterday the people in the apartment underneath me asked what the humming sound was, coming from upstairs. I told them it was an over working AC unit.

They said the only really notice it when they are about to go to sleep and they here the light humming noise.

My question is, what can be done to quiet it down? Should I set my tent on a mat, blanket, some type opf sound proofing? Any assistance would be helpful.

I can't raise any suspicion.

Do you have it connected to a fan controller?

If not you can get one and turn it down in speed at night.
Ahh, that makes sense, just turn it down at night, about half speed and that should kill the noise. But what if they get real quiet during the day and continue to wonder what the sound is. They are super F'n nosey.

That type of speed controller pulses the electric current in a square wave, is hard on the fan, they also induce a hum, the controller evil showed you uses a sign wave and the motors love them
I bought two of these on Tim's recommendation and could not be happier with it. Stupid quiet exhaust fan and working to perfection.

I would try aspeed controller first, but if your fan needs to run higher than you need for heat issues then use sound dampningdampening, like I wrapped my fan in a small blanket once

Thanks so much for adding your input....

So currently it's a 430 cfm fan through a cool tube and let me tell you... I'm hard pressed to feel much heat coming from the 1k metal halide light. If I get the speed controller.... The pricey one.... Bring it down to half speed will I still have a nice cool light with no noise problems?

PD!

Half speed will quiet that fan awhole bunch, then you measure the temps , if the temps are good ,,, then your golden, if bthe temp is to high, try a higher speed you dial it in with the controller, you have to use sound damping if you run out of useful adjustment on the fan, make sense

Yup, makes total sense. Thanks a ton for the useful info.... I'll let you know how it turns out.

PD!

I put my fan inside of a cooler with insulation in it. 1 hole in the bottem for the pipe and another out the side for the out pipe. Very quiet.

Or suspend it on rubber bungie cordes. The rubber will absorb some/most of the vibration.

Tell them that humming is the sound of you minding your own goddamn business! And you'd appreciate it if they don't ask you about the noises your sibian machine makes! That's the name of that dildo machine right?

If you can't get caught...neighbors that complain about noise are just as likely to complain about smell...foot traffic...strange fertilizer bags and bottles showing up in the dumpster...

Just saying bro if you can't get caught for legal reasons...move somewhere where the neighbors don't feel the need to do anything more but wave and say hey how ya doing when you see them outside.

I know saying hey you should move doesn't sound economical or helpful...I'm just trying to highlight your need to be careful. Cause being raided sucks when you're doing things legally...I could only imagine the horror of it if you're doing things illegally.

So you run a lot of ducting for that I'm assuming? You out the cooler on the ground? Does it eat up your floor space?

I'm not worried about smell, no extra foot traffic or n e thing like that, and it's super low key. I'm not exactly Pablo Escobar, u know?

Nope. Only total of 6 feet for ducting. 3 on each side. And i have it up on top of my grow room.
The cooler is sitting on more insulation. It is vented right out the faciea of the garage. Cant even notice it.
