favorite 90s strains

An old friend that was "farming" in TX used to bring up (to the Midwest) a load of weed a couple of times a year. In the late 80's it was called skunk because his whole truck smelled like a roadkill skunk. Don't know the genetics but it was the first time I heard a name for weed that wasn't MX or Columbian. That was my first time seeing donkey dick weed, wish I would have had pix of those. Early 90's he got shut down by the feds so that ended his trips with a stinky truck. They never got him but he had to change his job description in a hurry. He also made "drops" in MI, OR, and CA in that time frame and I always wonder if those "groups" remember the donkey dick skunk from TX.

I still grow Skunk #1 but I never get close to his terpene bonanza.

you literally proved my point. but legalization didn't exist back then. and you can thank the selection over the periods of decades to get your coveted "proven" clones. those are not new strains but the grandchildren of previously selected strains crossed with God knows how many landraces.
I wasn't debating, just stating opinion. Yes, almost everything today came from something back then, just like we evolve and get better, so do the plants.

My point was, instead of line breeding or back crossing a worked line, which is what many think of true breeding, where the plants come out uniform, same size, same structure, same taste and smell, some poly hybrids selected from true winners can throw genetic curve balls that when selected can be better than a worked line.

Hard to pick one but here's a few:

Afghani #1, Durban Poison, White Widow, NL5, AK47, Power Plant, Kali Mist, Skunk #1, Super Skunk, Master Kush, Neville's Haze, Sensi Star, Herijuana

The funny thing about nostalgia is remembering how good it was. I bet half of the shit that we thought was great in the 90's cant stand on the same stage as some of the hybrids that have been bred for the last several years.

I had some 90's blueberry back in the day. My old homies still talk about how good it was. Long story short the old hippie i know still has a cut and how i remember it and how it is compared to the elites of today is totally different. Its garbage.. it wasnt back then but it is now. Something are better as a memory.

I agree, in terms of potency and taste. For me, there is no denying the stuff I smoke now is WAY better than the stuff I smoked 25 years ago...but i dont think its the genetics that are better - IMO its the indoor growing methods and equipment (particularly lighting). That shit has come a LONG way since then growing a couple plants in your basement with old school incandescent bulbs.

"todays stuff" doesn't specify exactly. I'm sure it could be true about most of the crap that is going around.

Sure line bred and homogenous genetics are a true art, but more important is selecting.

Many didn't have the space, time, or money to do actual selections like can be done today and it shows.

Everyone of my plants i run have been selected by 100 + to god knows how many seed stock, where there was only keeper. And that speaks for itself.

People think a strain or a cross is just that and its not at all. If you buy a pack or two of seeds and select a keeper, chances are its shit. Run 500 and select a keeper and you might find something special, or not. But the true art of selecting and breeding only the best of the best. Sure they arent stable or uniform. I dont run seeds, i run proven clones that alwasy impress, and blows the doors off any ak47, white widow, or any of the things we thought were good back then.
Eh...
Depends if a line homogeneous, you should easily be able to find a keeper in a pack - because they are homogeneous.

The idea of buying 50, 10 packs to find a keeper seems like a huge waste of money. Get your 1-2 packs and open pollinate to do a seed increase and THEN make your REAL selection seems more economical way to get to where you're going without spending $5000 trying to find 1 keeper.

I agree fully with the "if they're homogeneous" then you should find a keeper in every 10 pack.

We need to run 100s of plants to find keepers due to polyhybrids and the chase of f1 hybrid vigor.

You'll find more "rare/elite" phenos in polyhybrids f1s than you will running anything past f3, imo.

I hear ya Eso - lemme ask ya man, do you think there are more gems in f1s or f2s for a breeder? I'm still learning, but I was under the impression that f1s were sought after for production because of hybrid vigor and somewhat predictable combination of traits (1:3:1?) , but f2s were better for breeders looking for unique combinations of traits diving into the grandparents recessive traits?

If you're going to lock down certain qualities the for sure you find another step closer to your goal via f2.

With today's seed market and breeders like cannarado dropping hundreds of crosses every year, f1s be selling! It reminds me of the baseball/sports card crazy. Everybody wants that rare insert.

this is literally the card collection mind set
That's kinda what the seed industry has become now, most of us that have been growing for a while have all kinda fell victim to that mindset. I have more seed packs than I need, it'll take me years to run them, and I have 3 flower rooms and over 2k watts just for veg. I found it addicting at times but have cooled my jets lately. I'm have aquired a somewhat big clone collection and I have some very elite packs I want to run soon.
That's what gets tough though>when you start running too many packs..you find absolutely stunning phenos and then to keep those new strains you usually have to let go of some of the old stock cuts you have been running a while.
Fav 90s strain would have to be NL, white widow, and AK-47. Dont know if AK qualifies, I first saw it around in the early 00s.

Couchlock, Afghani Dream, Black Domina...those are probably my top 3 from the mid to late nineties and into the early 2000s. Unless you grow or know someone who grows, it's very hard to find dank that compares these days. At least in my neck of the woods. Kind of depressing really. I haven't grown in years and am getting increasingly annoyed with the quality of the cannabis I get through the mail.

I was 6th grade summer! Summer of ‘85, was some purple hairs and mixed purple buds, I stole it from dads stash jar. I asked him what it was as an adult, he said probably what he just called purple indica. I actually started getting better grades in school after that. Also noticed another kid smelling like he knew what I figured out, lol
My uncle grew a strain simply known as "Purple Indica". It was very popular around here in the mid to late 90s.

I can't even imagine the bro science floating around back then as to why and how the flower was purple. even today if you ask someone who doesn't grow why it's purple you get some amazing answers. to date my favorite is that's just dye added to special fertilizers to make buds stronger and the purple buds are a sign the dude growing it "really knew what he was doing "

people are fun

Hard to find dank that compares to the old days?? Dude where do you live? Sorry you don't have to answer that. In my opinion the weed today blows the weed of yester-years out of the water. Especially modern strains and just growing technology, techniques and environment when comparing today's to weed back in the 90s. I mean I feel like we all get waxy nostalgic about weed from back in the day when we were growing up. To me the weed around present time is on a such a better level it's not even comparable. That sucks it's not readily available to you, I sometimes forget not everyone lives in a legal state..
