Do you count flowering from 12/12 switch or when you see pistil hairs?

That's not totally true. We used to grow peaches, apples, and other fruit. We would know, through experience, that a certain variety of peach, for example, would always be ready for a first pick at 153 days from full bloom. Of course that was used as a guide, but we could have always made the first pick at 153 days and not been wrong. The better one is degree growing days. We use that for bugs.
It's amazing to me that to a certain degree I can rely on the days cannabis breeders quote for indoor to determine where I'm at with that cultivar outdoors. Again, experience matters.
I grow figs. The brebas usually finish mid July. This year it was August.
That’s where days don’t come into play.
The fruit is ripe when the fruit is ripe.
As you say, experience helps you determine that.
Way better than days on a seed packet.
Ive grown enough cannabis as have many around here that we look at the flower, not count the days.
I’m sure you do too.
But new growers don’t have that eye yet so they look at what the packet says and end up here asking if it’s ready.
And 99 times out 100 they’ll get 10 responses explaining that it’s not.
Keeps us busy I guess.

Just so I've got this correct, regardless of 12/18hrs you'll still get some veg period?

Cheers!
This is a valuable lesson for you about plant growth I suppose. Yes plants when grown 12/12 from seed will absolutely still veg for several WEEKS before they start to flower. The plant must reach a point of genetic maturity before it will try to reproduce. Some plants are faster at maturing then others. But they all take time.

How did this thread become so complicated?

From seed - count when pre-flowers form
From clone - count at flip

Outdoor the transition is gradual.

All of this info is useful to help guide our grows, especially for those running perpetual.

Yeh, you're right. I have been retired, but I hear the young guys talk about things being early the last few years.
Someday said the best fertilizer is the farmers footprint, or sumpin. I guess it just means taking care of the plants. Being with them.

Thank you, it seems so obvious now you have told me, last night I was thinking I'm going to try that to see how it goes, baffled on the likely outcome rofl.

I remember reading some equatorial countries get 2 crops per year but still never even considered their veg period.

In my defence I've always made it clear that i only grow it lol.

Cheers...

Growing 12/12 from seed goes well with many cultivars. The plants obviously stay smaller then a fully vegged plant grown under 18 hrs of light, but that just allows you to run more plants in a SOG.

Even better then 12/12 from seed is just finding a mother plant and running clones though. I spent 10 years running clones on a perpetual cycle. The cuttings got rooted, then vegged for about 2 weeks in the final 6inch square pot, then flowered. You can fit 45ish plants in a 4x4 space like that. On average I pulled about 20g dried per plant, but high yielders would get up to and 30g each.

I'm looking for a simpler way to find the best pheno that could be the ticket.
I've cut back to only 5 plants because of the work involved with taking regular clones then managing them and flowers at the same time, I'd normally take a monster clone to make it easier and buy me time but I'm not a big fan of them unless cloned after revege, a better option would be put seeds straight to 12-12 then revege my favourite ones?

That sounds too good I must have missed something?
