Right to work

RTW is the idea that it's your choice to be in the union right? If that is what it is why are people making a fuss over it?

You mean "right to work for less" laws?

Go read up on right to work states, wages etc.... Of course it sometimes is made out to look like it is a good thing but please take the time to see who came up with it and why, what wages were before and after the law passed and what states have it.... (mostly red and southern states)

If you are anti union and pro corporate greed you will like "right to work"

Altho some studies do in fact show faster growth in RTW states, they usually refuse to show where this job growth is, low paying jobs, so that upper management can pay themselves more instead of fair wages to employees.

Well right to work circumvents Unions. Means if you want to work and not strike, you could work. Almost like a reverse Union for those who do not want to strike for say; raising their medical insurance 3 dollars a month.

I think Unions are good and bad. I recently went over to an indoor grow expo, which was Union ran. To bring a chair to sit on for two days, cost 85.00 dollars to rent. NO you cannot bring your own in. So, that is as abusive as BIG govt in my eyes. Therefore Union gets a strike against it. No punn
My girl works Union and we pucker every time the Union lords gather and try to prove their worth, as one is the Union Leader and the Other is a Lawyer for the Owners of the company. All trying to prove their worth.

Grocery is one of the slimmest margin businesses to get into. Two things I would never invest my $$ into, Grocery or a Restaurant (unless I wanted to be a dirtbag, then Walmart and McDonalds would work) lol

Being forced to participate in a Union doesn't seem like it ensures any "rights"...it seems like it takes away an individuals choice to make an independent decision.

My state is a rtw state and we do in fact have low unemployment but our wages all took a big hit too. 10 dollars an hour is a great starting wage here. I don't know if its good or bad though. I've never really sat down and thought about it.

$10 an hour is a shit wage.

i would blindly put money on RTW states having lower average wages.

Your telling me. Haven't even been offered ten an hour since high school. But here people are all too happy with it. In fairness this like rent are very low. But we still have to pay for gas, grocerys and the like.

Unions can be good or bad really I am pretty neutral on this subject. I agree with Robs statement also..sometimes they are like the mafia lol...I am definitely not against right to work and I don't think anyone should be forced to join a union ever but I am in favor of unions when they actually work which I think is actually a bit rare in this day in age. I also feel that Unions are propped up to be much bigger heroes then they actually were in the past and exaggerated in their role often.

I think they were probably pretty good for manufacturing back when we actually had manufacturing.

$10 per hour starting for someone with no experience isnt such a shit wage. That is $1600 per month. Someone can rent an apartment, have a significant car payment, phone, internet, cable and pay for groceries on that income.

What do you recommend for a starting salary $30???

Id say 14$ an hour sounds about right for michigan, but they pay low income people like 7 to 10 lol....

I don't think you could pay for all that here not alone (on 1600$ a month), maybe barely, you wouldn't even have a dime exrtra.... with some help sure from friends, family, or spouse sure....or the government lol...that is technically slavery because you could never work your way out of it espeically if we didn't have social secuirty, medicaid, or medicare.

I did come out of poverty but its because I am fortune to be a healthy man that is somewhat intelligent with lots of skills but most aren't so fortunate, not everyone can be entrepreneurial.

$14 an hour sounds right for what?

Setting a payroll without account for costs involved or pricing of products and services isnt the smartest way to run a business.

The only thing a minimum wage helps is the government.

its what you need to make to do well for yourself. I am not preaching for minimum wage just saying if you make less than that your just a slave and will get nowhere in life and probably can't even take care of yourself in this economy in this part of michigan, not without the help of family or friends at least..

You are assuming one hell of alot there.

That is a starting wage we are referring to. You assume the person has no upward mobility, no drive to find another job that pays better in a few years.

You want the guy's first burger job to make him a wealthy man with a family of 4 kids?

IT IS A STARTING SALARY!!

Since you seem to not be interested in any of the economics of these jobs, why not just make the starting salary for all jobs $50.00 per hour and make everyone happy? I mean, since it is such a great idea with no downside!!

$10 an hour is the starting wage for someone with no skills, People with a PHD are not starting at $10 an hour. $10 an hour is not the wage that everyone in a RTW gets, most get much more.
When Unemployment runs out $10 an hour will keep you from living on the streets.

Minimum Wage is NOT intended to raise a family, it was intended for low skilled workers to be able to get a foot in the door.

My last job in a RTW state paid me $33 an hour plus full bennies.

Oh I hope I didn't come across as saying all jobs pay 10 all the time I was simply stating the starting wage. I know coming from Minnesota I never heard of a factory worker starting at 10 an hour but in all fairness the cost of living here is about half that in mn. You like that quote huh?
