Veg with HPS

I was under the impression you can easily veg under a HPS light. The plants would simply grow shorter and more bush-like then under a MH. Now I've got one bloke who says that HPS should never be used in veg, and that it's the reason I'm having such colossal problems with soil.

...it's the other way around man, the HPS delivers more red light which promotes stretchier plants while the MH delivers more blue light which promotes shorter, bushier growth.

...and you can absolutely veg under HPS and you'll get lots of growth, but the downside is you'll get taller, stretchy plants with lots of distance between the nodes so you end up with lots of smaller buds spread over a lankier plant rather than fewer, larger buds because, being shorter and bushier, the buds grow together more on a plant that was vegged under MH.

...you can also flower under MH quite successfully so don't take as carved in stone anything someone tells you can't be done until you try it and prove to yourself it can't be done, ...often you'll find that it can, in fact, be done.

Sure, no worries, but not if I have a 'choice'.. (and I would have to be in the back woods or totally broke to NOT have a choice these days)...

I veg fine with hps.

I even have been known to pop seeds under hps.

I also clone during veg time using the same hps.

Link in my signature to my last grow using 400w hps from start to finish.

I veg with hps and have not had any stretchy plants they grow just as short and bushy and when I use MH. I've never had any problem, except now my wallet is a little heavier not having to buy a bunch of bulbs lol

Not wrong. I personally have vegged with both and since I went hps the whole grow I have notice no diffrence.

My 600 watt hps made such short bushy plants that I raised the light in hopes of the plants stretching a bit.
I think the people saying you are going to get stretched plants have never vegged with HPS before.

You can veg with HPS or MH.

MH is better for veg but saying HPS won't work is bull shit as per

I use a 600w HPS with enhanced blue spectrum bulb and my plants are so thick and bushy I have to move my light higher like trousers

I bought a HPS/MH set up & used the MH bulb for the entire grow (thought I had the HPS in for veg by mistake, turns out I left the MH in for flower by mistake) end of the story is, the weed was great, in fact, I would say that by flowering in MH the plan got much bushier. The grown around the stock was unreal. That's what made me realize the mistake. Used HPS after that for flower. Less budding, but better buds (if that makes sense).

dont take peoples words as gospel. I've done everything wrong listed on this site & still gotten buds. Not great, & not lots. But more than if I had given up & trashed the stuff because people said it wouldnt work. Im trying a deep freezer now with 8-10 t-8 shop lights in it so see how that will work. Less heat & hidden in plain sight :) Will post how it goes.

HPS grow lights usually come with some added blue spectrum nowadays. I use to only veg with a MH but eventually I became tired of switching them out and left my HPS in from flowering and saw NO difference whatsoever in the way my plants vegged. Still get tall stretchy sativas and bushy indicas like nature intended.

These were all grown from start (popping seeds) to finish with a SYLVANIA GROLUX 400w hps.

Total dry yield was 427g.
