as you have seen there's no simple answer to your question. most of the best growers train their plants, many top and trim (many times) but all these huge plants receive plenty of sun and are grown in huge holes or containers amended with all kind of goodies.

I'm putting poison and those creatures eat it regualry. still they destroyed two of my plants which were big and I thought they couldn't be harmed anymore. looks like rats can't resist these plants and I'd like to protect them before flowering starts. is there anything we can do to stop rats?

18 hours of day light, where you're from Alaska? ;-) in my location just like your's, 13 hours of day light is reached around 10th of april. longest day of the year is 15 hours and 20 minutes long. equator days/nigths are always 12/12. I'm really no expert here, but my guess is that too early...

thanks. soon there will be no frost danger. climate is similar to your's if you're on shore. I thought it would be too early to germinate before days get 13-14 hours long. depending on strain. indicas will start flowering earlier than sativas I guess?

what do you meen by poor soil? too much clay/sand, no vegetation there, too shallow? I would save your energy for making the hole as big and deep as you can. can't go wrong with well rotten manure.

I don't get what's the problem? why would they start flowering if days are getting longer inside of that window just like in nature? too early?

well there's one little problem with what you're saying about 16 hours of light. in my quite sunny location the length of the day (light) on summer solstice is only 15 hours and something minutes :D which meens the day is never 16 hours long. you must be right for indoor growing technique...

wait a minute they need to be on direct light for 16 hours, or days need to be 16 hours long (indirect light)? I think that's a big difference, I would need to take them outside everyday, right. anyway I shouldn't start the germination before days are 16+ hours long. I thought that silver foil...
