holy hell, during the invasion and the uprising late 04 in the south we killed more innocent people than anything else. the insurgents hide and open fire from among them.. we return it.. 500 people caught in a marketplace crossfire.. daily occurrence.. you come back no longer human no longer with the same sense of empathy, and you hate the very people you swore to protect. do this day i only associate with vets, or the unknowing soldiers of the war on drugs.. aka you people.. the rest of america can burn in concentration camps for all i care, make compost from them for my plants.

side note to bearo... we didn't need you to come on here and villify any cause, or to tell us why the army isn't your style, in all honesty unless you've already been down that road, if your on this site it shouldnt be your style.. this is simply gijane asking perspective on military from people who actually have something to offer. not that i dis agree with your views, especailly about the retarded cowboy in office, but untill your ready to take up arms in revolution, just sit down and shut the fuck up.. people just fucking talk no action, this is why america is so shitty. lets run our mouths from our soap boxes hevan forbid we get our hands dirty.. i want mine bloody
Never went to Iraq, different war different time. I know a little about Nam though. Same old shit, kill ratio at least 500:1. Get shot at with an AK, drop 10,000 lbs of napalm on general area. Maybe he hasn't been to war and he's a bit narcissitic, wanting to smoke pot while his country re-arranges the world to please the elites, but he has the general Idea. I long ago outgrew my attachment to the Army and all my buddies, moved the fuck on, not to say I don't have a shitpot of fucked up memories, but some good ones also. Life is a journey, By the time you figure it out, it is over. Some don't even get that chance. Actually in this time and space, one is more likely to die from an auto accident, but I agree, your odds of dying are greatly increased in a war zone. They missed me. Depending on ones outlook on life, that could be good or bad.

This is why you don't want to join the Army.

There are three types of military:

1) Officers or the smart ones that score high on the ASVAB. They can pick the service and MOS or Rate. They get advanced rank and pay with huge reinlistment bonuses and great schools. Large companies will contact them before they get out and try to get them to come work for them.

2) The average Joe that scores average on the ASVAB. They get to pick from whatever left over jobs the smart guys don't want. Although I would still rather wash jets in Hawaii than take a bullit in Iraq.

3) The slackers that score low on the ASVAB. The dumb fucks. Targets.

If you can't score high on the modern ASVAB there's something seriously wrong or you are dyslexic. The current test is a sad, sick joke.

I worked with some smart Army mother fuckers! The smartest guys in my class was an Army guy. All the services send their spooks to Navy schools. These guys (and ladies) were not grunts though. They had class like you. Same with the Marines I worked with. It's not that they couldn't kick ass if needed but mostly they would just shut the fuck up and listen. Not in any language you or I would understand of course.

Everyone in secure communications was top notch. Ironically the Navy handles all the secure communication for all the services. They handle all the hubs and listening stations. I got to work closely with every service 24/7. We were all called spooks. We even had the same chain of command. You know what I'm taking about, right?...

All the services got along great. No one gave even a tiny little fuck what service you were in but everyone had to respect rank. But when you need your computer fixed you know were you gotta come begging;-)

Things haven't changed much. Everyone still begs me to fix their fucking computer. Let me say this to all those reading this thread right now...
Learn to fix your own fucking computer!:wall: (sorry to regress)

I scored a 142, and I gotta say, I was given royal treatment. For starters, I weighed less than 100 pounds when I walked into the recruiting office. Recruiter didn't even look interested until I took his little intro test, and then he took over. He fed me meals, he explained how to slouch off two inches, told me not to shit for a week before my second weigh-in (failed the first one). It's damn hard not to shit for a week, let me tell you. Remember that South Park episode with the giant turd? Well, mine was like 7 feet long and wouldn't flush, when I finally took a shit after successfully getting weighed in. They took me in front of 200 people waiting in line to pick their MOS and let me choose mine first. Even in my duty assignments, that score followed me around. I spent an unusual amount of time in Honor Guard doing funerals for an extra $260/day. When I wanted to go back to Grenada, I was the only one allowed to go back a second time. When I arrived at Fort Huachuca, the inprocessing guy saw my score and immediately assigned me to his unit. It was a burden in some ways, and sometimes I wonder if I might not have had a better experience if I'd played at least a little dumb.

So yeah, that is pretty much how it seemed to work. Give the high scoring folks whatever they want, give the average folks and the rest whatever was left. I didn't think that was actually right, but I'm not one to cause trouble, so I just did what I was told, went to the front, and picked what I wanted.

Where we are failing our soldiers today is in treatment for PTSD. They don't have enough counselors to handle the load, so our soldiers aren't getting the care they need, and a lot are having problems. Ironically, I've suffered from PTSD since I was a child, but since the violent events that caused my PTSD happened in childhood, before I was a soldier, I'm not eligible for any treatment via the VA. I doubt they could do much for me anyway -- once you've survived with PTSD for more than 30 years, you've obviously figured out how to make life work. I'd be scared to change anything at this point, as that might make things worse, and I've adapted; it's a part of who I am now, I'm just one hypervigilant mofo.

WHOEVER the next president is, I hope he realizes how badly our soldiers have suffered and are suffering. They deserve better. We owe them more.

Not for a week? Jesus Christ. I heard if you are coming home from Iraq and are diagnosed with PTSD they won't allow you to defend your home. IE You cant get a gun. This true?

Curious...is it still mandatory that all military personnel must serve one year in Iraq?
If you sign up as a computer tech you will go where ever that computer system is stationed. Could be anywhere in the world.

For example, my system was never put on a ship so I had shore duty for 10 years! I've never even set foot on a ship! And don't think I didn't know that when I was picking my school.

This is the way is works in the military. You come in with high test scores and you write your own ticket. If you fucked off during high school, you become another fish in the barrel.

I came in at the top 1%. The recruiter shit himself right on the spot. That means Nuke or Spook, the two hardest jobs to get. I wanted to have children some day so I picked spook:hump:

I signed up for six years as an advanced electronics tech in secure communications. The program made me a E3 out of boot camp and a E4 after my second school. That means a lot more money and privileges like getting extra pay to live off base.

First two years was nothing but school 8 hours a day (and study another 4 at night). I did nothing but live, eat and breath computers and electronics. I seen some smart mother fuckers kicked out of school because they scored a 74% on just one test!

We had a test every Friday! We started with hundreds of sailors and it ended up being just a handful of people at the end. It was a trip watching all my shipmates get sent away. By the time we got to our final schools there was no one left. There was almost as many teachers as students! I shit you not!

Everything was decided by test scores. They made a list starting with the highest scoring first. Top of the list got to pick their final schools first. This was a big deal in the Navy because if you don't want to go to sea you can pick a computer system that is land based only. (that's what I did)

You can also pick a system that will guarentee you a good job when you get out. The system you are trained on also decides your enlistment bonus when the time comes.

For example, the Navy offerd me $16K, orders to anywhere in the world and any school I wanted to stay in for another 4 years. That's why I ended up doing 10 years in the Navy. That money ended up being my ticket to collage later. I also attended another computer school and picked orders to Hawaii so I could surf and windsurf everyday.

I can't over emphasize enough the importance of high test scores if you want to join the military. It's not just when you join but all through your training also.

I've seen so many people (that scored in the top 3% on the ASVAB) in tears after being dropped from school. It's like CYA...they don't fuckin care. You don't pass, it's your ass. Time to go scrape paint for four years. If you're not willing to sign over 110% to school you won't make it.

The very small amount that actually make it through school have it pretty good after that though. You're pretty much set for life at that point. You can get a job anywhere you want, making huge money.

My whole point is this. Everything in the military is decided by test scores. The end...

is there possibility at all I can smoke during enlistment without being caught or punished? More specifically bases in Texas.

Yeah, I wouldn't recommend it. They are allowed to randomly test you, and you will likely be incarcerated for both lying on a government document (saying you never used drugs), and for being in possession of an illegal substance on government property. Pretty serious offenses, not to mention an dishonourable discharge and money you will have to PAY BACK to Uncle Sam.

Thanks everyone for telling like it is. I'm really sorry life's so rough for vets. It;s not right. You guys DO deserve better-being willing to pay the ultimate price for our basic freedoms, and this is the kind of treatment you come home to. I respect you all for saying that shit, because it needs to be heard. Word. And Thanks again for your service. Salute.

My son scored exceptionally well on his ASVAB as well. His recruiter said "You can pick anything you want short of Nuclear Engineering. He chose Hull Tech and went the NDT route (you can't get there if you don't do well on your test scores, but he got it). He's been treated well and has had duty at Little Creek, VA working on LCAC's and is now in Guam inspecting fast attacks and boomers. IMO, I hope he re-ups.

Here is an example of another brain washed child.

You need to quite watching so much TV and learn the truth.

4,100 have died in the war so far in the last 5 years.

Every year over 40,000 Americans die in auto accidents. That means in the same amount of time over 200,000 men, women and children have died on our highways. WTF! Why don't you protest that?

Do you think it's cool to be a war protester? Do you not care if your friend dies on the freeway but hate the fact that a soldier dies in Iraq? Do you think to be a proper hippy you need to oppose the war?

Just curious, how many patients are you growing for now? I have 5 cancer patients that I take care of for nothing. One of my patients is a mother with 3 kids. My medicine keeps helps to keep her alive. What about you? What the fuck do you do to help others.

Why don't you STFU and actually do something instead of just talk!

Word. Almost makes me want to stop dicking around and make a decision already. The only thing keeping me from signing up right now is waiting to see who'll get elected...I think right now is a not such a good time to join the miltary-what if McCain is elected and decides to continue the occupation of Iraq, and increasing military presence overseas? i don't want to get shipped out...what are my chances of that happening if I choose a medical services MOS? Think I'll be sent to a tent hospital in a war zone?

Yes, I do. Choose something very, very technical. If they put time and money into your schooling they'll be a lot more recalcitrant to put you in IED's way.

My son has a friend who's an Iraq vet, sent home on a medical after being injured by an IED (big surprise there, huh?). He was 14 months there. He's joined an anarchist's group.
