Quantum boards ... QB 304 S5 bin ( OG boards 4 year old ) with Citize COB ( 3500K )
These were some of the first offerings from HLG .... I jumped on board when they were just being introduced.
I run perpetual grows and these have been running none stop SINCE I built that rig in 2015 . Those COBS were actually purchased from HLG when they “ used “ to sell COBS on their site. I have been touching base with @robincnn and @Stephenj37826 thruout the past few years , even testing proto boards , so I have great respect for their gear. These S5 bin leds have been doing well , no dim on any string , manageable temps and awesome results.

Power has been upgraded since original build , now I remote mounted 2 ) 240w meanwell B type ( pot dimmed for each set of 2 boards parallel ) . The cool thing is when I bought these 4 boards they were all Vf matched so I can configure all 4 in series or parallel or by sets of 2 . I do have the original Slate 1 heatsinks so I have to supplement active cooling hence the clip fan for power up. COBS are powered at 120w and no longer dimmed ( leads open ) .

Current power is about 420w ( 300w at boards ) with the 120w cobs in a 3x3. I actually like running even softer at times as to control stress. I love them.
Temps are ambient room temps ( 76 - 81 ) with or without added oscillating fan. Cali temps . Height about 18” . Any younger plants start “ below “ canopy at about 22” to 24” until they get their legs and then on risers to match canopy. 3500k is the best to control
node spacing , and am growing a comparative grow under QB96s elites and they are 3000k with red 660 ( better flower ).

No humidifier, No a/c , No CO2 ....

One MOD tho , is the Mylar masking to the inside of my tents ..... much better use of light , less loss.

Here is why I believe in these boards ..... This was another rig I built from an idea by @Growmau5 modifying an old blurple panel.
It was a mars hydro 600 white ( classic ) that I gutted and replaced with One QB 304 and one of the on board drivers. Gave it a rustoleum hammered finish from a rattle can and it was reborn ! It’s even sporting the original sticker from the board in 2015 that I put on the outside.
In same 3x3 ..... at a lousy 50watts total , I grew 4 plants ! ...... Nobody can tell me these boards don’t do it’s job !
Look at the operating temps .... I reused the on board fan cooling added a few more vent holes and that’s it.

Bottom line is I’m sure any setup / lights will work even outdoor.
Excellent information, thank you! I was curious how hard you were running the plants, and that answers my question.

Thank you so much for this great information! I am exciting to try this on my next grow! Regarding the PH, are you testing your soil PH anytime? Or just making sure the water going in is in the 6.3-6.5 range? Thanks again!
Happy Monday

Kind of basic really ..... find out the mediums PH requirements and match it.
However , check your water. Everywhere is different , some municipalities are all over the place in hardness and ppm from it.

So how many cups of perlite should I use for a 2 1/2 gal. pot?
Do you have a preferred brand of perlite?
Thanks.
I really don’t “ measure “ officially “ .... for a 3 gallon , I do 2 fistfuls ( sorry lol )

Also , I should mention that perlite is PLAIN non charged perlite. NOT MIRACLE GROW PERLITE ( that has Nutes embedded ).

You can use chunkier grade perlite if desired . Most nurseries sell 4 - 6 cu.ft brown bags of perlite . Recommend grabbing one for your mixes and to have bulk on hand.

Someone contacted me about Vermiculite..... It tends to hold water a little longer and keeps moisture close to roots but I still want the drainage and aeration over Vermiculite.

But when I run hempy ( Dutch ) buckets I mix a 3:1 ratio of Vermiculite/ Perlite For use.
( may do a thread later on that ).

Hey that works for me. 1 and a half fistfuls it is for me then.
Which brand would you suggest that I can get at Lowes or the other big stores?
Thanks.

Since I run autos “ mostly “ .... I find that I really don’t get root bound ( as it were ) But definitely get better and fuller use of host soil.
I have been doing a lot of grow bags lately , have air pots too ( need to break them back out ) .Autos can grow just fine in 1/2/3 gallon containers ( for me since I do meds for myself ) and would rather have more plants going than say 1 big 5 gallon bucket hogging up my tent ...... exception if I am running a Mephisto that is.

Mephisto Toof : ( 5 gallon )
Medium : FFOF / LIGHT WARRIOR mix 50/50
Nute : Megacrop
Water : Tap 6.5 ( allowed for drift )

I like LST .... so this plant had tent all to herself . Sometimes I would turn plant to equalize exposure since I run open door tent.

Notice : Pull on Mylar ( running 8” with a reducer at that time ). I had exceptional negative pressure when it was time to go dark and zip up.

My autos will utilize all of its container well before harvest ( since autos normally go under 90 days )...... normally that is.
I often sow seed straight to pot or bag ( final ) or start in solo as I stage perpetuals about 2-3 weeks apart so I can harvest every few weeks. I was shut down for about 2 months ( kids returned home *SMH ) so I lost an entire room of grow space and now relegated to 2 tents at moment until I kick they out again .....

I would run into wonky genetics more than root bound. Barney’s/ Cali Connection can suck it ........

Update :

I started 4 solos with those bagged KKP and took a pic on Oct. 24 .
Today they are looking pretty good .... minus one KKP that I am using in the Selfing seed thread I got going. But they are happy and growing out well on this Nov. 11.

They are the ones down the middle .... 2 strawberry diesel and 1 KKP.

It’s getting a bit too crowded in there so I am going to rearrange my plants between my tents.
Red color is from 630-600nm supplemental led lamp ( G8 ) .

This the other KKP I pulled for seed making ..... under 12/12 currently until sex then a CS bath to lower nodes with top cola for inpregnating once that begins flower . Seeds ain’t cheap ..... lol.

Have you ever mixed Happy Frog and FFOF?

It’s got ingredients similar to FFOF except crab meal and a few other things but I am sure it would work fine as a mix to do the layering but definitely a myco charge and perlite . Put FGOF at bottom 1/2 or 1/3 of container .... sprinkle / spoon the myco complex on top then cover rest of container with Happy Frog . Dampen and you are done.

Xtreme Gardening MYKO is another good bagged microbial blend.
But if you can get a bag of light Warrior few tablespoons in between works just as good.

I was at the local shop today picking up some HF and FFOF, when a guy came in and bought them out of FFOF, took the whole last pallet. I realized that in all the times I've seen commercial growers in there -- and they usually pre-order and then have their pallets fork-lifted onto flatbeds or into their trucks -- every time I've seen it, 100% of the time it's FFOF, nothing else. They didn't have as much FFOF as this guy wanted, but he said he'd come back when they had more, he didn't seem to consider any other bagged soil, and there was a pallet of HF sitting right there. I should have asked him why, but I was already checking out and thinking about other things... At any rate, it says something.
