Hey guys I have a 4x8 gorilla grow tent and I want to fill the space with 3950 cxb cobs. I was reading that you need 50 watts per sq ft of space so if I'm running the cobs at 50 watts each then I would need 32 cobs for a 4x8 ?? Am I wrong ? That is a stupid amount of money and light to fill that small of a space . Timber grow light recommended 1000-1200 watts for a 4x8 so I'm confused because that would be 24 cobs for a 4x8 . Still ungodly expensive ? Any input that isn't way over my head is greatly appreciated here .
You don't need 50w per foot with CXB3590s. At common currents you will need 30-35 watts per foot.

Wow so I could cut that down from 32 cobs at 50 watts each to probably 24 ? You are talking like 3 grand easy to power a 4x8 tent ? Does that sound correct ? With that many cobs running I will definitely be using my air conditioner to cool them just like my air cooled hoods . What is the benefit then to using the LEDs ? I flower under a 600 hps and get great size and density of my flowers . What am I missing here ?

With 3 grand you could make 48 cob light probably.

600w 56% efficient LED = 336 PAR watts (336 watts of light). Can't get that with a 600w HPS, even DE. If yo wanted to replicate a 600w HPS you would use less wattage.

@Big smo & anyone else for that matter. Feel free to post your Amare results on my thread & then just send people there if they are interested in the truth.
This thread here & many others are overwhelmingly controlled by guys/girls that are trying their damnedest to cloud the facts. Doing absolutely no justice to new led growers that are trying to find results on the lights they're considering.
I suggest the same thing be done for other led companies results through means of RIU growers hands.
I am going to start a new thread just for growers to post their reviews & results.

I have a Gorilla tent as well and 32 CXB3590 3500k just added another 8, they are turned down due to summer and no AC and I'm doing weekly YouTube videos

Yeah, I had one of those "shitty" autos under two "shitty" chinese lights and it STILL managed to give me 13 oz of quality bud!

Might not be the most efficient on paper or best at growing coral but it sure as shit can grow good weed. Can't wait to figure how many gpw this light got me. Best part is they are those shitty autoflowers that don't yield much lol. 10 plants left to chop

Plant no 1

ive noticed more vigorous growth and better terpine development. the more vigorous growth can lead to nute deficiencies. They need more juice than my plants under the hps.
I agree with what others said, you can grow more plants with less wattage draw. Or get more yield or the same yield with less wattage.
you dont have to transition at once. look for specials on leds, get one and add it with an hps. See what you think.

So you are running 32 cxb 3950 for a 4x8 tent and it is not enough light ? So you added 8 more to make 40 cobs ? What does that do to your electric bill ? Seems as that would draw more watts than a 1000 mh /hps ?

No I have them turned down to like 23w right now due to summer heat where I live but 32 will be your magic number just make sure your cobs are spread properly

Damn that gets expensive quick !! I have a 6 cob light right now still waiting to be built . I guess I need to save up a lot more money or stick with what has worked and keep my mh/hps . I was hoping to get something better or as good and cut down on the electric bill. That won't happen with 32 cobs running haha . Maybe I need to wait a couple more years for the less to get a little better ?

1000 hps doesnt cover 4x8 either. It covers 4x4 maybe 5x5 imho
I use 2 600 s and it covers my tent just fine . In my opinion 1000s burn to hot and strong for my environment . A 1000 watt hps cost a few hundred bucks though and a 1000 watts of cobs cost like 4 grand . You can never recoup that loss . Especially if you are pulling almost as much from the wall to light the same space with less canopy penetration ? Still have to run ac ? Where does the savings come in ? I have a hard time believing that my end product will be 4 grand better than my regular lights ? Am I wrong? I'm not looking for an argument at all just facts and help so please don't think I'm bashing anything at all.

your missing the point dude, if your run 600w of anything your paying for 600w but if your running 600w of cxb3590 @ 700mA then your getting almost twice the amount of usable light and half the amount of heat than you would get from 600w hps
If 600w hps is 35% efficient then 65% is heat. You can almost reverse that with Cobs

The outlay is large but if you can pull almost 2g per watt instead of 1g or less then they will pay you back in a few harvest.
I use 600w hps too so don't think I am biased towards cobs. Its just math.

dont get me wrong hps still works fine.
I think your 4k number is a bit high, im betting closer to 2500 buying prebuild lights if you watch for sales or pick one company and ask for a bundle deal. If you cant recoup that cost in one run, well, Im betting you can. DIy should be even cheaper, im guessing under 2k.

But by all means stick to hps. proven track record. But just consider buying an led to put at the end of the grow space or something and see what you think.

The difference between afn and riu is a matter of respect. state your case, present your arguments and be done with it! I don't have to wade thru 10 pages of shit talking, chest thumping adolescent 30yr old, know-it-alls, to get one page of useful information like we do here.
Don't get me wrong, a lot of good people here, BUT, rui lets the assholes run rampant and ruin it for others. They need mods who do their job and let the rest of us have an intelligent conversation! Isn't that what we're suppose to be doing???

Worst part is half you guys are probably decent people are extremely intelligent but it's wasted on arguing. If I didn't pick up on the intelligence part so soon I woulda been outta here. I learn a lot off of you guys. Head to afn where the mods just yelled at me for talking shit on Mars hydro. Then continued to talk about how his 300w hydro Galaxy was bleaching his plants at 24" away.
